Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask learners to name something they want and something they need at home.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Content focus:

  • Needs: Things essential for survival and wellbeing such as food, shelter, clothing, education, and healthcare.
  • Wants: Things that are nice to have but not essential, such as toys, gadgets, sweets, and luxuries.
  • Importance: Needs are prioritized to ensure a healthy, safe, and productive life, while wants are optional.

Practical examples:

  • Show pictures of items like rice, school bag, candy, toy car, and ask learners to classify each as a need or want.
  • Discuss how families make choices when resources are limited: buying food before toys.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Sorting activity: Learners sort pictures or real items into needs and wants.
  • Group discussion: Share reasoning behind classification; discuss examples from their homes.
  • Chart creation: Draw a table of family needs and wants, labeling each and explaining why it is important.

Assessment Checks (Expanded):

  • Observation: Ensure learners correctly classify needs and wants.
  • Oral questions: Ask learners to explain why a particular item is a need or want.
  • Participation: Note ability to reason and discuss in groups.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Understanding needs vs. wants helps families prioritize spending and use resources wisely.
  • Encourages critical thinking about essential items versus optional luxuries.
  • Emphasize that meeting needs first ensures health, education, and safety.

Optional Extension/Assignment:

  • Learners make a personal chart of their daily needs and wants and share one example of each in class.
  • Discuss at home with parents how their family decides between needs and wants and report back.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Recap differences between needs and wants and why it is important to prioritize needs.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: List one need and one want of your family.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.
