Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask learners to describe the places they go to every day and who they interact with. Show pictures of different community areas and ask students to identify them.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Definition and Explanation:

  • Community: A community is a group of people living in a specific area who share resources, culture, traditions, and facilities. Communities can be small (like a neighborhood) or large (like a town or city).
  • Key features of a community:
    • People: Residents, families, workers, community leaders.
    • Places: Schools, hospitals, markets, parks, water points.
    • Culture: Traditions, languages, festivals, shared customs.
    • Shared resources: Roads, water supply, electricity, community centers, sanitation systems.
  • Community services: These are services that help people meet their needs and improve quality of life. Examples:
    • Hospitals/clinics: Provide healthcare and treatment.
    • Schools: Offer education and learning opportunities.
    • Police stations: Ensure safety and law enforcement.
    • Markets: Provide places to buy and sell food and goods.
    • Water supply and sanitation: Access to clean water and proper waste disposal prevents disease and promotes health.

Demonstrations and Examples:

  • Show pictures of hospitals, schools, markets, police stations, and water sources in the local area.
  • Role-play scenarios:
    • Visiting a hospital for a checkup.
    • Buying food at a market.
    • Reporting a problem to a police officer.
  • Discuss with learners examples from their own neighborhoods and towns.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Group discussion: Talk about features and services in their own community.
  • Map activity: Draw and label a simple map of their community showing key places and services (hospital, school, market, water point, police station).
  • Role-play: Act out visiting a hospital, market, or school and using the service appropriately.

Assessment Checks:

  • Ask learners to name at least three community services and explain what each does.
  • Check learners’ maps for correct labeling of services and understanding of features.
  • Observe participation in role-play to assess understanding of service usage.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Community services are essential because they meet basic needs like health, education, safety, and food.
  • A community has both physical aspects (buildings, roads, facilities) and social aspects (people, culture, traditions).
  • Understanding the roles of community members and services helps learners appreciate cooperation, interdependence, and civic responsibility.
  • Encourage learners to identify service gaps and think of ways their community can improve.

Optional Extension/Assignment:

  • Interview a community helper (nurse, teacher, or vendor) and write 2–3 sentences about how they help the community.
  • Create a poster showing five important services in the community with illustrations.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
Recap the definition of a community, its features, and the importance of community services.

Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Ask learners to list two features and two services in a community
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback
