Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask learners to share illnesses they have experienced or know. Discuss symptoms.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Define communicable diseases as illnesses that can spread from one person to another, either directly (touch, cough, sneeze) or indirectly (contaminated water, food, surfaces). Explain each disease:

  • Cough: Symptoms – persistent coughing, sore throat; transmitted via airborne droplets.
  • Tuberculosis (TB): Symptoms – chronic cough, weight loss, fever, night sweats; transmitted through the air from infected persons.
  • Chickenpox: Symptoms – itchy rash, fever, fatigue; transmitted via direct contact or airborne droplets.
  • Measles: Symptoms – high fever, rash, cough, red eyes; transmitted via airborne droplets.

Discuss prevention measures:

  • Regular handwashing with soap and water.
  • Covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  • Keeping distance from infected persons.
  • Vaccination where available.
  • Maintaining clean living spaces and safe drinking water.

Use stories or role-play scenarios showing a family member falling ill and the steps taken to prevent the spread, emphasizing care, hygiene, and seeking medical attention.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Identify diseases using pictures or flashcards.
  • Describe one symptom for each disease in groups.
  • Role-play proper hygiene practices: handwashing, covering coughs, keeping personal items clean.
  • Discuss how their families prevent illness at home.

Assessment Checks:

  • Ask learners to name three communicable diseases and describe one symptom of each.
  • Observe role-play for correct hygiene techniques.
  • Engage learners in short oral Q&A about prevention measures.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Communicable diseases spread easily, especially in communities with poor hygiene.
  • Understanding symptoms helps early detection and treatment.
  • Vaccination and hygiene practices are essential for personal and public health.
  • Encourage learners to apply preventive measures at home and school to stay healthy.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Recap diseases, symptoms, and prevention methods.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Name two diseases and explain one way to prevent them.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded): Draw a poster showing ways to prevent common diseases.
Follow-up Activity: Practice handwashing and observe hygiene habits at home.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies: Provide visual aids for learners with reading challenges; group learners for peer support.
