Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes

The teacher begins by saying a short paragraph: “Yesterday I played with my friends. We’re going to school tomorrow. We cleaned the blackboard.” Students identify verbs, contractions, and blends in the sentences.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

👦🏽👧🏼 Learners’ Activities (Expanded)

✍️ 1. Group Story Writing: "A Day at School"

  • Learners are divided into small groups (3–5 students).
  • Each group is tasked with writing a short paragraph (5–6 sentences) on the topic:
    “A Day at School”
  • Their paragraph must include:
    • At least 3 verbs showing different tenses (present, past, and future)
    • At least 2 contractions
    • At least 3 words with consonant blends

Example Paragraph:

“Today I play with my friends. Yesterday we played football. Tomorrow we will write our test. We cleaned the classroom and thanked our teacher. We’re ready for the next day!”

🖍️ 2. Language Identification Activity

Once the paragraph is written, learners:

  • Underline all the verbs
  • Circle all contractions
  • Highlight or color all blend words

This helps reinforce grammar and word recognition in a hands-on, engaging way.

Example:

  • Underlined: play, played, write, cleaned, thanked
  • Circled: we’re, it’s
  • Highlighted: play, cleaned, friends, test

🗣️ 3. Reading Aloud (Pronunciation Practice)

  • Each group selects one person to read their story aloud to the class.
  • Other group members help with difficult words.
  • Teacher listens for:
    • Clear pronunciation of blends
    • Correct use of verb tenses
    • Natural reading with contractions

📘 Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

🔁 Why This Integration Matters

This lesson combines several language topics already learned:

  • Verb Tenses: past, present, future
  • Contractions: forming and using shortened forms with apostrophes
  • Consonant Blends: identifying and spelling words with blended consonants

Bringing them together in one writing activity:

  • Reinforces retention
  • Encourages critical thinking and self-correction
  • Builds confidence in writing and reading
  • Gives learners a real-world context for using grammar

🔡 Quick Reminders for Students:

Verbs:

  • Present: I play
  • Past: I played
  • Future: I will play

Contractions:

  • we are → we’re
  • it is → it’s
  • did not → didn’t

Blends:

  • pl in play
  • fr in friends
  • cl in cleaned
  • tr in train/test

✅ Assessment Checks (Expanded)

Teacher uses formative assessment by circulating and checking each group’s progress:

🔍 What to Look For:

  • Are learners using correct tense verbs?
  • Are contractions formed properly (with an apostrophe)?
  • Do the blend words show correct spelling and pronunciation?
  • Are they correctly marking verbs, contractions, and blends?

🗣️ Oral Checks:

Ask individual students:

  • “What tense is this verb?” (played)
  • “What two words make up we’re?”
  • “What blend do you hear in the word cleaned?”
  • “Can you say that sentence again but with the full form of the contraction?”

📝 Assignments (Expanded)

🏫 Classwork

  1. Integrated Writing Task
    • Each group writes, edits, and presents their “A Day at School” paragraph with all language elements.
  2. Individual Extension (Optional)
    • Students write their own version of the paragraph individually for extra practice.

🏠 Homework

  1. Personal Paragraph Practice
    • Write a short paragraph titled: “Tomorrow Will Be Fun!”
    • Include:
      • At least 3 future tense verbs
      • At least 2 contractions
      • At least 2 blend words

Example:

“Tomorrow, I’ll go to school early. We’ll play in the field. I will bring my crayons and draw with my friends.”

  1. Highlighting Homework
    • Highlight verbs, circle contractions, and underline blends at home—just like in class.

🎲 Optional Enrichment Activities

🎭 Grammar Detective Skit

  • Each group performs a mini-drama using at least:
    • 5 verbs (different tenses)
    • 3 contractions
    • 3 blend words
  • The class tries to spot and list the grammar elements in the skit.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)

Time: 5–10 minutes

Summary: Students revise all key concepts—verbs show action and tense; contractions shorten speech; blends make words flow smoothly.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):

Exit slip/quiz: Write one sentence that includes a verb in the past tense, a contraction, and a consonant blend word.

Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded): Write a paragraph about “My Best Day” using at least five verbs, three contractions, and three blend words.

Follow-up Activity: Share stories aloud next class.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies: Teacher encourages group collaboration and allows verbal storytelling for those who struggle with writing.
