    • Stories: Narratives with characters and plots.
    • Articles: Informative writing on various topics.
    • Letters: Personal or formal communication.
    • Reports: Factual and structured presentations of information.
  1. Demonstration of Comprehension Strategies
  • Teacher models how to:
    • Predict outcomes: Guess what might happen next based on clues.
    • Ask questions: Think about who, what, when, where, why, and how while reading.
    • Summarize: Briefly restate the main points in own words.
    • Identify main ideas and supporting details: Find key facts that explain the main point.
  1. Guided Reading Practice
  • Students read short passages from different text types provided by the teacher.
  • While reading, learners highlight or underline the main ideas and supporting details.
  • Encourage students to pause and predict what might happen next or ask questions about unclear parts.

✅ Assessment Checks

Teacher:

  • Asks questions based on the passages, such as:
    • “What is the main idea of this paragraph?”
    • “Can you name two supporting details from the text?”
    • “What did you predict would happen next?”
    • “What question did you ask yourself while reading?”
  • Checks students’ ability to explain which comprehension strategies they used and how these helped them understand the text.

📘 Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

  • What is Reading Comprehension?
It is the ability to understand, interpret, and make meaning from written text, not just reading words aloud.
  • Key Strategies for Comprehension:
  1. Predicting: Using clues and background knowledge to guess future events or outcomes.
  2. Questioning: Engaging with the text by asking questions to clarify understanding.
  3. Summarizing: Condensing information to capture the main idea and essential details.
  4. Identifying Main Ideas and Details: Differentiating between the central message and the facts or examples supporting it.
  • Diverse Text Types:
Using a variety of texts exposes learners to different writing styles and purposes, strengthening overall comprehension skills.
  • Practice Tips:
Use short, manageable passages and gradually increase complexity as learners become more confident. Encourage active reading by stopping at intervals to discuss and reflect on the text.

✍️ Example Guided Passage Activity

Passage:
“Tom loves to read stories about animals. Yesterday, he read about a clever fox who outsmarted a hungry wolf. Tom thinks the fox will win because it is smart and quick.”

Activity:

  • Highlight the main idea: Tom enjoys reading stories about animals.
  • Underline supporting details: The story about the clever fox and the hungry wolf.
  • Predict: What might happen next in the story? (e.g., The fox escapes or tricks the wolf.)
  • Ask a question: Why did the fox outsmart the wolf?

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
Students summarize the passages read, share main ideas and supporting details, and discuss strategies they used.

Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Students write one main idea and two supporting details from a passage read in class.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded)
Read a short story at home and identify the main idea and three supporting details.

Follow-up Activity
Prepare for Week 26, focusing on improving speaking skills through reading aloud.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Pair struggling readers with stronger peers. Provide visual aids and word banks for support.
