Teacher tells a short story and asks students to identify what happened, where it took place, and who was involved.

What Are Story Elements?

Story elements are the building blocks that come together to create a complete story. Understanding these helps readers follow and enjoy the story more fully.

 

The Seven Key Story Elements

Element

Definition

Example from Cinderella

Plot

The sequence of events — what happens in the story.

Beginning: Cinderella is treated badly. Middle: She goes to the ball. End: She marries the prince.

Characters

The people, animals, or beings in the story.

Cinderella, her stepmother, the prince, the fairy godmother.

Conflict

The main problem or challenge the characters face.

Cinderella wants to go to the ball but is stopped by her stepmother.

Setting

Where and when the story happens.

A castle and Cinderella’s home, long ago.

Climax

The turning point or most exciting moment.

When the glass slipper fits Cinderella’s foot.

Resolution

How the conflict is solved or ended.

Cinderella marries the prince and her problems are solved.

Theme

The main lesson or message the story teaches.

Goodness and kindness will be rewarded.

  • Story: The Three Little Pigs
    • Characters: Three pigs, the wolf
    • Setting: The pigs’ houses in the forest
    • Conflict: The wolf tries to blow down the pigs’ houses
    • Climax: The wolf cannot blow down the brick house
    • Resolution: The pigs are safe in the brick house
    • Theme: Hard work and preparation pay off

 

📝 Extension/Practice Activities:

  • Provide students with short stories or fairy tales and ask them to complete story maps.
  • Have learners write a brief summary identifying each element for a story they know well.
  • Encourage creative writing: students create their own short story using all seven elements.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
Students restate the story elements and explain their importance.
