Week & Period: Week 20, Period 4
Topic: Suffixes
Sub-topic: Introduction to Suffixes
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
- Explain the meaning of suffixes and how they modify root words.
- Identify common suffixes: ment, ity, able.
- Form new words by adding suffixes to root words.
- Explain the meaning of newly formed words.
Previous Knowledge
Students already know that prefixes change the meaning of root words.
Instructional Materials
English Language textbook for Grade 4, flashcards with suffixes and root words, chart papers.
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher writes root words such as agree, toxic, market on the board. Students suggest what might happen if we add ment, ity, or able to these words.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
👦🏽👧🏼 Learners’ Activities (Expanded)
- Teacher Explanation and Demonstration
- The teacher introduces the concept of suffixes as word parts added to the end of root words to change their meaning or grammatical function.
- Examples are given on the board:
- -ment means “the state or result of an action.”
- -ity means “the condition or quality of.”
- -able means “capable of” or “worthy of.”
- The teacher explains each suffix with sample words:
- agreement (agree + ment) means “the state of agreeing.”
- toxicity (toxic + ity) means “the quality of being toxic.”
- marketable (market + able) means “capable of being sold or marketed.”
- Word Formation Activity
- Students are given sets of root word cards (agree, toxic, market, enjoy, use, etc.) and suffix cards (-ment, -ity, -able, -ful, -less).
- In groups, students combine root words with suffixes to create new words and then discuss or write down the meanings of these words.
- Examples created might include:
- enjoy + ment = enjoyment (the state of enjoying something)
- hope + ful = hopeful (full of hope)
- care + less = careless (without care)
- Meaning Explanation and Sentence Writing
- Each group selects some words they formed and explains their meaning in their own words.
- Students then write simple sentences using these new words to demonstrate understanding.
- Example sentence: “The children showed great enjoyment at the park.”
✅ Assessment Checks
Teacher asks orally or in writing:
- “What does the suffix -ment mean? Can you give an example?”
- “Form a new word with the root word toxic and suffix -ity and explain its meaning.”
- “What does -able mean in words like marketable?”
- “Can you use the word agreement in a sentence?”
- “What happens to a word’s meaning when we add a suffix?”
📘 Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
- What is a Suffix?
A suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a root word that changes its meaning, its grammatical function (e.g., from verb to noun), or its form (e.g., from adjective to adverb).
- Common Suffixes Covered:
- -ment means “the state, process, or result of an action.”
- Examples:
- agree → agreement (the state of agreeing)
- develop → development (the process of developing)
- -ity means “the condition or quality of being something.”
- Examples:
- toxic → toxicity (the quality of being toxic)
- active → activity (the condition of being active)
- -able means “able to be” or “capable of.”
- Examples:
- market → marketable (able to be marketed)
- read → readable (able to be read)
- How Suffixes Change Meaning:
Adding a suffix often changes the word from one part of speech to another, for example:
- Verb to noun: agree (verb) → agreement (noun)
- Adjective to noun: toxic (adjective) → toxicity (noun)
- Noun/verb to adjective: market (noun/verb) → marketable (adjective)
- Students’ Practice:
Students should be encouraged to use the new words in sentences to reinforce meaning and usage.
✍️ Practice Exercises
- Word Formation – Combine the root words and suffixes to form new words:
- enjoy + ment = ___________
- active + ity = ___________
- read + able = ___________
- Meaning Explanation – Write the meaning of these words in your own words:
- agreement
- toxicity
- marketable
- Sentence Writing – Write one sentence for each of the words you formed.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
Students summarize the suffixes learned and give examples of new words formed.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Write one root word, add a suffix, and explain the new word.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded):
Write five words using suffixes ment, ity, or able and explain their meanings.
Follow-up Activity:
Next class will focus on combining prefixes and suffixes to form new words.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Group learners by ability to practice word formation together. Use visual charts and word lists for support.
