Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• Where do you go on vacation?
• How do you get there?
Learner’s Role:
Share experiences orally and recall transport vocabulary.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)

Introduce new vocabulary related to travel destinations: en vacances (on vacation), à la plage (at the beach), à la campagne (in the countryside), en ville (in town). Use clear, colorful pictures or photos showing these places to build visual context. Pronounce each phrase slowly and clearly, emphasizing the prepositions (en, à la, à) and articles. Write the phrases on the board or chart paper, highlighting prepositions and articles separately for clarity.

Model simple sentences combining travel places and modes of transport vocabulary introduced earlier. For example:

  • “Je vais à la plage en voiture.” (I go to the beach by car.)
  • “Nous sommes en vacances.” (We are on vacation.)
  • “Il va en ville en bus.” (He goes to town by bus.)

Explain the structure of the sentences, pointing out the subject, verb, preposition, destination, and transport mode. Use gestures to support meaning (e.g., pointing to a picture of the beach when saying à la plage).

Guide learners through interactive activities such as:

  • Picture description: Show images and ask learners to describe the place using French phrases.
  • Fill-in-the-blank exercises: Provide sentences with missing words for learners to complete with vocabulary from the lesson (e.g., Je vais ___ plage en ___.).
  • Oral repetition: Have learners repeat modeled sentences as a group, then individually, focusing on clear pronunciation and rhythm.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Practice oral repetition of travel places vocabulary and full sentences after the teacher.
  • Complete fill-in-the-blank worksheets or oral exercises, supplying missing travel destination or vehicle words.
  • Match pictures to phrases, e.g., match a picture of the beach to à la plage, or a vacation photo to en vacances.
  • Describe travel destinations using simple French expressions like Je vais à la plage, Nous sommes en vacances, or Il va en ville.
  • Work in pairs to practice saying short sentences aloud and correcting each other’s pronunciation gently.

Assessment Checks

  • Ask learners to form short sentences orally or in writing about where they or their family go on vacation and how they travel, using vocabulary learned.
  • Listen for correct vocabulary usage, focusing on the correct prepositions (en, à la, à) and sentence structure.
  • Provide immediate feedback on errors, especially prepositions and agreement.

Peer Review

  • Pair students to ask and answer simple questions such as:
    • “Où vas-tu en vacances ?”
    • “Je vais à la plage en voiture. Et toi ?”
  • Encourage peer correction for pronunciation and sentence completeness.
  • Allow pairs to share favorite sentences with the whole class for additional speaking practice.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Reinforce the use of correct prepositions for places:
    • à la for feminine singular places (la plage, la campagne),
    • en for countries or feminine places (en vacances),
    • à for cities or towns (à la ville simplified as en ville here).
  • Emphasize clear pronunciation of prepositions and liaison between words.
  • Encourage learners to speak in complete, simple sentences rather than single words.
  • Use repetition and gestures to aid memorization.

Assignment (Homework)

  • Write 3 sentences describing where you go on holiday and how you travel, using French vocabulary. Example:

Je vais à la plage en voiture.
Nous sommes en vacances à la campagne.
Il va en ville en bus.

  • Encourage neat handwriting and the use of the correct article and prepositions.
  • Optionally, learners can illustrate their sentences with simple drawings of vehicles and places.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
• Exit slip/quiz: Oral recall of one place and one mode of transport.
• Follow-up Activity: Pair students to practice short conversations about trips.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Use visuals for context, peer support for struggling students, and sentence starters for beginners.
