Construct simple sentences describing ownership of travel items.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
Transport vocabulary and simple phrases with “voici” and “c’est.”

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: French for Beginners, Grade 4
• Flashcards with vehicles
• Pictures for labeling

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• How can we say “this is my…” in French?
• How do we show ownership of objects?
Learner’s Role:
Recall prior vocabulary and respond orally using known phrases.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)

Introduce the demonstrative adjectives: ce (this/that – masculine singular), cette (this/that – feminine singular), ces (these/those – plural). Write them on the board with examples of masculine, feminine, and plural nouns:

  • Ce vélo (this bike),
  • Cette voiture (this car),
  • Ces camions (these trucks).

Next, introduce the possessive adjectives: mon (my, masculine singular), ma (my, feminine singular), mes (my, plural), ton (your, masculine singular), ta (your, feminine singular), tes (your, plural). Explain that the possessive adjective changes depending on the gender and number of the object possessed, not the owner. For example:

  • Mon vélo (my bike, masculine singular),
  • Ma moto (my motorbike, feminine singular),
  • Mes vélos (my bikes, plural).

Model clear sentences combining demonstrative and possessive adjectives with transport vocabulary, such as:

  • “C’est mon vélo.” (This is my bike.)
  • “Voici ton camion.” (Here is your truck.)
  • “C’est la jolie voiture de papa.” (This is daddy’s pretty car.)

Explain the meaning of the phrase “la jolie voiture de papa” to introduce simple descriptive adjectives and possession by using de (of). Demonstrate sentence construction slowly, writing examples on the board and pronouncing them carefully, stressing gender agreements and plural forms.

Guide learners through sentence construction exercises using pictures of different vehicles and objects. Encourage learners to label pictures or flashcards with correct demonstrative and possessive adjective phrases. Use matching games where students match adjectives with the correct nouns (e.g., match mon to vélo or cette to voiture).

Encourage oral repetition of sentences with correct pronunciation and intonation. Provide support and corrections as needed.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Construct sentences using demonstrative (ce, cette, ces) and possessive adjectives (mon, ma, mes, ton, ta, tes) with transport vocabulary, both orally and in writing.
  • Label pictures of vehicles and objects with appropriate phrases (e.g., C’est mon vélo, Voici cette moto).
  • Participate in matching games pairing adjectives to nouns correctly, reinforcing gender and number agreement.
  • Practice oral repetition of modeled sentences to improve pronunciation and fluency.
  • Work in pairs to quiz each other on adjective use by showing pictures and asking: “C’est quoi ?” or “C’est à qui ?”

Assessment Checks

  • Monitor students’ ability to form accurate sentences using demonstrative and possessive adjectives during oral and written tasks.
  • Check for correct gender and plural agreement in adjective use.
  • Listen carefully to pronunciation and sentence rhythm, offering corrections where necessary.
  • Use quick oral questions during the lesson to assess comprehension and application.

Peer Review

  • Students exchange their written sentences and check each other’s use of demonstrative and possessive adjectives.
  • Encourage polite peer corrections focused on grammar and pronunciation.
  • Allow students to share good examples aloud for whole-class reinforcement.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Reinforce the importance of gender agreement (e.g., mon vs ma) and plural forms (ces, mes, tes).
  • Highlight common errors such as mixing masculine and feminine forms or forgetting plural agreement.
  • Encourage active oral participation to build confidence in speaking complete sentences.
  • Use visual aids and repeated exposure to solidify understanding.

Assignment (Homework)

  • Write 5 sentences using demonstrative and possessive adjectives with transport vocabulary introduced in previous weeks. Examples:

C’est mon vélo.
Voici ta moto.
Ce sont mes camions.
Cette voiture est jolie.
C’est ton bus.

  • Encourage learners to check spelling and gender agreement carefully.
  • Optional: Draw a picture of one vehicle and label it with a sentence using a demonstrative and possessive adjective.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
• Exit slip/quiz: Oral identification and sentence formation with one demonstrative and one possessive adjective.
• Follow-up Activity: Pair practice with sentences describing vehicles.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Provide sentence starters for learners needing support. Use visual aids and modeling for all students.
