By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Identify the five senses and related body parts in French.
Construct simple sentences describing senses: “Je vois avec mes yeux.”
Use vocabulary in oral and written exercises.
Previous Knowledge
Students already know body parts vocabulary (head, eyes, nose, mouth, ears, arms, hands, legs, feet).
Instructional Materials
• Textbook: French for Beginners, Grade 3
• Visuals and diagrams
• Flashcards
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• Which body part do we use to see? To hear? To touch?
Learner’s Role:
Respond orally, point to body parts, recall vocabulary.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role (Expanded & Detailed)
- Introduce Vocabulary & Expressions (5–6 minutes)
Begin with a brief oral recap of the body parts already learned, focusing especially on the head and sensory organs:
- les yeux (eyes)
- les oreilles (ears)
- la bouche (mouth)
- le nez (nose)
- les mains (hands)
Then introduce the five senses using clear, simple French sentences. Write each on the board and say them aloud slowly:
- Je vois avec mes yeux. (I see with my eyes.)
- J’écoute avec mes oreilles. (I listen with my ears.)
- Je touche avec mes mains. (I touch with my hands.)
- Je goûte avec ma bouche. (I taste with my mouth.)
- Je sens avec mon nez. (I smell with my nose.)
Explain that each verb is paired with a body part, and all begin with "Je" (I), making it personal and relatable.
- Demonstrate Sentence Formation and Pronunciation (6–7 minutes)
- Use visual aids (pictures of children using their senses) or real objects:
- A flower (for smelling)
- A piece of fruit (for tasting)
- A textured item (for touching)
- A bell or sound clip (for listening)
- A picture or colored object (for seeing)
- Point to the relevant part of your own body and say the sentence clearly:
(Holding a flower) “Je sens avec mon nez.”
(Holding a soft cloth) “Je touche avec mes mains.”
- Emphasize the use of "avec" (with) and possessive adjectives mon/ma/mes depending on the body part’s gender and number.
- Model Oral Practice Using Gestures and Visuals (6–8 minutes)
- Call students to repeat each sentence, adding gestures:
Je vois avec mes yeux. – point to your eyes
J’écoute avec mes oreilles. – cup your ears
Je touche avec mes mains. – wiggle fingers or touch desk
- Use a mini call-and-response exercise:
Teacher: “Je goûte avec…”
Class: “…ma bouche !”
- Use real-life images and ask students to describe them using one of the expressions.
- Guide Writing and Labeling Activities (8–10 minutes)
Distribute worksheets with a human figure and five boxes representing each sense (can be drawn or printed). Learners will:
- Label each sense with the correct body part.
- Write the full sentence beside each part.
Example:
🖐️ Je touche avec mes mains.
👃 Je sens avec mon nez.
Support learners with sentence starters and a vocabulary box on the board:
- Verbs: voir, écouter, toucher, goûter, sentir
- Body parts: les yeux, les oreilles, les mains, la bouche, le nez
Walk around to provide pronunciation correction and spelling support.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed)
- Choral Repetition
Repeat each of the five sentences multiple times with the teacher, focusing on:
- Correct pronunciation of verbs and body parts
- Use of mon/ma/mes appropriately
- Kinesthetic Sentence Practice
Learners stand and act out each sense as they say the sentence:
- Touch their desk and say: Je touche avec mes mains.
- Smell an object or mime smelling: Je sens avec mon nez.
- Worksheet Activities
- Label a diagram or picture with the sense and its related body part.
- Write five full sentences in French, one for each sense.
- Partner Practice
Practice reading the five sense sentences to a partner, helping each other with pronunciation and grammar.
Assessment Checks (Formative)
- Oral Questioning:
Call on learners one at a time:
“Avec quoi est-ce que tu vois ?” → Je vois avec mes yeux.
“Avec quoi est-ce que tu goûtes ?” → Je goûte avec ma bouche.
- Sentence Writing Check:
Collect worksheets or circulate while students write. Check for:
- Proper sentence structure
- Accurate article use (mon, ma, mes)
- Correct spelling of body parts and verbs
- Pronunciation & Grammar Observation:
Monitor pair work and repetition activities, correcting gently where needed.
Peer Review
- Sentence Sharing:
In pairs, students read their five written sentences aloud to one another.
Partners follow along and check:
- Is the correct body part used for the sense?
- Is the article correct? (e.g., ma bouche, not mon bouche)
- Is the sentence complete?
- Peer Feedback Phrases (Encouraged in French):
- Bravo !
- Tu as oublié le “s” à “mains.”
- Ce n’est pas “mon bouche,” c’est “ma bouche.”
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
- Verb Focus:
Teach that all action words (je vois, j’écoute, etc.) are verbs and must agree with the subject “je”.
- Prepositions and Agreement:
Emphasize the role of "avec" (with), and how mon/ma/mes changes with:
- mon nez (masculine singular)
- ma bouche (feminine singular)
- mes mains (plural)
- Multi-Sensory Engagement:
Reinforce learning with a mix of visual aids, gestures, real objects, repetition, and writing.
- Language Support Tools:
Keep vocabulary posters on the wall or board with all five senses and related body parts for reference.
Assignment (Homework)
- Written Practice:
Learners will write 5 complete French sentences, one for each of the five senses.
They must:
- Use the structure: Je + verb + avec + mon/ma/mes + body part.
- Write neatly and underline the body part in each sentence.
- Example Sentences:
- Je vois avec mes yeux.
- J’écoute avec mes oreilles.
- Je touche avec mes mains.
- Je goûte avec ma bouche.
- Je sens avec mon nez.
- Optional Extension:
Illustrate one of the senses in action (e.g., drawing a person tasting food or smelling a flower).
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Evaluation Method:
• Exit slip/quiz: Match senses to body parts.
• Follow-up Activity: Oral practice in pairs using “Je vois avec…” etc.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:
Use visuals and hands-on activities for kinesthetic and visual learners.
Teacher’s Reflection:
• What worked well? Students enjoyed linking senses to body parts.
• What needs improvement? Spend more time on pronunciation of longer sentences.
• Students’ engagement level: ☑ High ☑ Medium ☐ Low
