Week: 15

School Name:
Teacher’s Name:
Subject: General science
Grade Level: Grade 4
Date: Week 15
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 15, Period 3
Topic: Measurement
Sub-topic: Measuring Length

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Identify tools used for measuring length
Demonstrate how to measure objects using rulers and tape measures
State the units of length such as centimeters, meters, and inches

Previous Knowledge
Students already know that objects can be long or short by observation

Instructional Materials
Ruler, meter stick, tape measure, objects like pencils, books, and tables

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher shows a pencil and a table and asks: “Which is longer?” Learners answer. Teacher asks: “How do we measure correctly?”

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Learners observe the teacher demonstrate how to measure length using a ruler, meter stick, and tape measure.
  • Learners practice measuring classroom objects such as pencils, books, tables, and doors.
  • Learners state the units after measuring: centimeters (cm), meters (m), inches (in), or feet (ft).
  • Learners discuss which tool is suitable for shorter objects (ruler) and which for longer objects (tape measure or meter stick).
  • Learners compare the measurements in different units, e.g., measuring a book in cm and inches.
  • Learners record the measurements in their notebooks and discuss their findings with a partner.

Assessment Checks:

  • Teacher asks learners to measure a pencil and report the length in centimeters or inches.
  • Teacher asks learners to state which unit is used for very long objects and which for short objects.
  • Teacher observes learners during practice to ensure they measure accurately and read the scale properly.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Length: Length is how long or tall an object is.
  • Tools for measuring length:
    • Ruler: Measures short objects in centimeters or inches.
    • Meter stick: Measures medium-length objects up to 1 meter.
    • Tape measure: Flexible, measures long objects or around curves.
  • Units of length:
    • Metric: centimeters (cm), meters (m)
    • English/Imperial: inches (in), feet (ft)
  • Key points for learners:
    • Always start measuring from the zero mark.
    • Read at eye level to avoid mistakes.
    • Choose a tool appropriate for the length of the object.

Assignment/Homework:

  1. Measure three objects at home, such as a notebook, chair, and door, and write their lengths in both cm and inches.
  2. Draw a ruler and a tape measure, labeling the units on each.
  3. Measure the length of a classroom desk and report in meters and feet.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher revises tools and units of length. Learners practice measuring.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Learners write one tool and one unit for measuring length.

Assignment (Expanded):
Measure three items at home with a ruler or tape and record their lengths.

Follow-up Activity:
Learners compare their measurements in the next class.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Teacher gives step-by-step instructions for slow learners, while quick learners handle larger measurements.
