Topic: Definition of Physical Fitness Screening
Sub-topic: Concept and Importance of Physical Fitness Screening
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to explain what physical fitness screening is, why it is important, and identify examples of fitness tests for endurance, strength, and flexibility
Previous Knowledge
Students already know: Basic physical exercises and components of physical fitness
Instructional Materials
Measuring tape, stopwatches, cones, mats, charts for recording results
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Discussion: Ask students if they know how to check their fitness levels. Quick warm-up with stretching and light jogging
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Definition of Physical Fitness Screening: Explain that physical fitness screening is a systematic evaluation of a person’s health and fitness levels. Emphasize that it helps us know how strong, flexible, and healthy our bodies are.
Importance: Discuss why screening is essential: it helps monitor growth, track progress over time, identify strengths and areas that need improvement, and guides safe participation in exercises and sports.
Examples and Demonstrations: Show simple ways to assess fitness components: endurance (short runs, walking tests), strength (push-ups, wall sits, sit-ups), flexibility (sit-and-reach or stretching tests). Demonstrate each test step by step, explaining correct posture, breathing, and safety.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded): Students perform short, supervised fitness tests in pairs or small groups. After each test, they record results in tables or charts. Encourage learners to discuss in pairs what their results indicate about their strengths and areas needing improvement. Students can set simple personal goals based on their results (e.g., improve the number of push-ups or stretch further).
Assessment Checks: Teacher observes proper technique, safety, and effort during each activity. Ask learners questions such as: “Name one test that measures endurance,” “Which test shows flexibility?” and “How can you use these results to improve your fitness?”
Notes (Expanded & Detailed): Physical fitness screening is a valuable tool for self-awareness and personal growth. It encourages learners to set goals, practice regularly, and understand the importance of maintaining good health. Emphasize safety, correct techniques, and honesty in recording results. Practical demonstrations and peer discussions reinforce learning and motivate students to participate actively.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Recap the meaning, purpose, and examples of physical fitness screening
Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Students write one reason why fitness screening is important
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback
Assignment (Expanded): Observe a family member or peer performing a simple fitness test and note results
Follow-up Activity: Prepare to participate in actual screening tests in upcoming lessons
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies: Provide alternative exercises for students with mobility limitations
Teacher’s Reflection (After Class)
