Subject: Physical Education
Grade Level: Grade 4
Date: Week 15
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 15, Period 3
Topic: Types of Wounds & Treatment
Sub-topic: Cuts, Scratches, Abrasions, Punctures and Their Care
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to identify types of wounds and apply appropriate treatment for each

Previous Knowledge
Students already know: Basic First Aid skills, cleaning wounds, applying bandages

Instructional Materials
Safe props for simulation, bandages, antiseptic, charts showing wound types

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Discussion: Ask learners if they have had cuts or scratches and how they were treated

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher Input (Expanded & Detailed):

  1. Types of Wounds:
  • Cuts: Sharp object breaks the skin; may bleed moderately
  • Scratches: Superficial marks from fingernails or rough surfaces
  • Abrasions: Skin rubbed off by friction; usually shallow
  • Punctures: Small, deep holes caused by pointed objects; risk of infection higher
  1. Treatment of Wounds:
  • Cleaning: Wash hands → rinse wound with clean water → apply antiseptic
  • Dressing: Cover with sterile bandage; ensure it is secure but not too tight
  • Monitoring: Check for signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus)
  • Seek Medical Help: If bleeding is heavy, wound is deep, or shows infection
  1. Demonstration:
  • Teacher models cleaning and dressing each type of wound on a fake arm or chart
  • Emphasize gentle care, hygiene, and calm reassurance

Learners’ Activities (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Station Practice: Rotate through stations practicing:
  1. Cleaning small cuts or scratches using safe materials
  2. Dressing abrasions and small puncture wounds
  3. Identifying which wounds require medical attention
  • Peer Observation: Students give feedback on technique and safety
  • Reflection: Discuss why proper wound care prevents infection and aids healing

Assessment Checks (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Observation: Teacher monitors:
    • Correct cleaning and dressing technique
    • Identification of wound types
    • Use of hygiene measures (handwashing, sterile materials)
  • Oral Questions:
    • “What is the difference between a cut and an abrasion?”
    • “When should you go to the hospital for a wound?”
  • Peer Feedback: Students explain one thing their partner did correctly

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Understanding different wounds helps learners respond safely and effectively
  • Correct treatment prevents infection and promotes faster healing
  • Supervised practice builds confidence in giving First Aid
  • Reinforce the importance of calmness, hygiene, and knowing when to seek help

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Recap types of wounds and correct treatments
Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Students write one type of wound and how to treat it
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback
Assignment (Expanded): Create a small poster showing wound types and care
Follow-up Activity: Review at next PE session using demonstration
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies: Pair students for practical activity to support learners needing help
Teacher’s Reflection (After Class)
