Learning Objectives

Previous Knowledge
Students already know about traditional and modern forms of communication.

Instructional Materials
Role-play scripts, flashcards with gender-sensitive statements, posters showing respectful communication.

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher tells a story where one person interrupts another and asks: “Was that good communication?”

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher begins by defining effective communication as the ability to share ideas clearly while listening carefully and showing respect to others. Teacher emphasizes the three key components: listening attentively, speaking clearly, and respecting the opinions of others. Teacher then introduces gender sensitivity, explaining that it means treating boys and girls equally in conversations, valuing everyone’s ideas, and avoiding discrimination. Teacher discusses gender bias, giving examples such as assuming boys’ ideas are more important than girls’ or interrupting girls while they speak. Teacher models respectful communication by demonstrating both good and poor examples: listening without interrupting, using polite words, asking for opinions from everyone, and responding thoughtfully.

Teacher emphasizes that being aware of gender sensitivity in communication helps create a fair, inclusive, and supportive environment in the classroom and community.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded)

  1. Role-Play Activity: Students work in pairs or small groups to act out short conversations showing poor communication (e.g., interrupting, ignoring someone’s ideas) and good communication (e.g., listening carefully, asking questions politely, valuing everyone’s input).
  2. Group Discussion: Learners discuss ways to promote respect for both boys and girls during conversations. They share strategies such as giving everyone a chance to speak, encouraging quiet learners, and avoiding biased comments.
  3. Writing Activity: Each learner writes one sentence demonstrating gender-sensitive communication, such as “I will listen to both boys and girls before giving my opinion.”
  4. Reflection: Students reflect on personal experiences where communication was unfair or biased and discuss how it could have been improved.

Assessment Checks
Teacher asks:

  1. “What is effective communication?”
  2. “Give one example of gender bias.”
  3. Observe learners during role-plays and group discussions to see if they practice listening, clarity, and respect for both genders.
  4. Review learners’ written sentences to assess understanding of gender-sensitive communication.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Effective communication involves three main aspects: listening attentively, speaking clearly, and showing respect for others’ opinions.
  • Gender sensitivity ensures boys and girls are treated equally and fairly in all conversations and activities.
  • Gender bias can be subtle or obvious, such as ignoring one gender’s ideas or assuming one is better than the other.
  • Teaching gender-sensitive communication helps learners develop empathy, fairness, and respect, which are essential for positive interactions at school and in the wider community.
  • Schools and communities should encourage everyone to listen, participate, and value all voices equally, creating an environment where all learners feel respected and included.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Good communication is clear, respectful, and equal for both boys and girls.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Write one way you can communicate effectively at home or school. Teacher collects and gives oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
Interview a family member about how they practice respectful communication at home.

Follow-up Activity:
Students keep a journal for one day about how they communicated respectfully.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Provide oral participation for students with writing challenges. Encourage pair work for shy learners.
