Date: Week 2
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 2, Period 1
Topic: Liberia’s Boundaries and Mountains
Sub-topic: Liberia’s boundaries (North, South, East, West); Major mountains: Mt. Nimba, Gedeh, Wologisi, Bong Range, Putu

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Identify Liberia’s political and natural boundaries, locate major mountains, and explain their importance.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
Map reading skills, compass directions, and neighboring countries.

Instructional Materials
Blank maps, colored pencils, globe, worksheets, pictures of mountains.

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask learners to name physical features they know and show a few pictures of mountains around the world.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Definitions and Explanations:

  • Natural Boundaries: Natural features like rivers, mountains, or oceans that separate one country from another. For example, the Atlantic Ocean forms Liberia’s southern boundary.
  • Political Boundaries: Imaginary lines drawn on maps to separate one country from another, usually agreed upon by governments. Liberia shares political boundaries with Guinea (North), Sierra Leone (West), and Ivory Coast (East).
  • Mountains: Elevated landforms that rise significantly above the surrounding land. Major mountains in Liberia include:
    • Mt. Nimba – the highest peak in Liberia
    • Gedeh Mountain
    • Wologisi Mountain
    • Bong Range
    • Putu Mountain
  • Importance of Mountains:
    • Influence climate by affecting rainfall and temperature
    • Serve as sources of rivers and streams
    • Provide natural resources like minerals and timber
    • Offer habitats for plants and animals, promoting biodiversity

Demonstrations:

  1. Map Demonstration: Show a map of Liberia. Highlight and label its boundaries: North – Guinea, West – Sierra Leone, East – Ivory Coast, South – Atlantic Ocean.
  2. Mountain Demonstration: Use the map to locate Mt. Nimba, Gedeh, Wologisi, Bong Range, and Putu. Show pictures of these mountains to help learners visualize their heights and features.
  3. Drawing and Coloring: On the board, draw a simple mountain range and ask learners to replicate it on their notebooks or blank maps, labeling each mountain.

Practical Examples:

  • Climate Example: Mt. Nimba affects rainfall in nearby areas, making some regions wetter and suitable for farming.
  • Water Example: Rivers like the St. Paul and St. John originate from mountainous areas.
  • Resource Example: Mountains in Liberia are rich in minerals such as iron ore and provide timber.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Map Activity: Learners label Liberia’s boundaries and major mountains on blank maps.
  • Drawing Activity: Draw mountains on paper and color them, labeling Mt. Nimba, Gedeh, Wologisi, Bong Range, and Putu.
  • Oral Discussion: Discuss why mountains are important. Example questions:
    • “Which mountain is the highest in Liberia?”
    • “How do mountains help provide water?”
    • “Can you name one resource found in the mountains?”
  • Pair Work: Learners quiz each other on boundaries and mountain names.

Assessment Checks:

  • Oral Questions: Ask learners to point out mountains on the map and explain one reason why mountains are important.
  • Map Quiz: Provide blank maps and ask learners to label Liberia’s boundaries and mountains correctly.
  • Observation: Check learners’ participation during drawing, coloring, and discussion.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Boundaries: Define the limits of Liberia:
    • North – Guinea
    • West – Sierra Leone
    • East – Ivory Coast
    • South – Atlantic Ocean
  • Mountains: Elevated landforms that influence Liberia’s geography.
    • Mt. Nimba, Gedeh, Wologisi, Bong Range, Putu
  • Importance of Mountains:
    • Influence climate (rainfall, temperature)
    • Provide water sources for rivers and streams
    • Contain natural resources (minerals, timber)
    • Support biodiversity (plants and animals)

Practical Assignment:

  • Draw a map of Liberia and label the boundaries and mountains. Color each mountain differently.
  • Write two sentences explaining why mountains are important to the people and environment in Liberia.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Students should now identify Liberia’s boundaries and major mountains and understand their geographical importance.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Label Liberia’s boundaries and at least two mountains on a mini-map. Teacher collects slips and provides feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
Draw Liberia with its boundaries and mountains.

Follow-up Activity:
Research one mountain in Liberia and present a short story or fact about it.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Pair learners for labeling activities; provide simplified maps for learners who need extra support.
