Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher reviews professions and adjectives learned previously. Quick oral drill: students describe a profession in one sentence. Teacher introduces demonstrative adjectives.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher begins by introducing the French demonstrative adjectives: ce (masculine singular), cette (feminine singular), and ces (plural for both genders). Teacher writes clear examples on the board with profession vocabulary and adjectives to show agreement:

  • ce médecin (this doctor - masculine singular)
  • cette infirmière (this nurse - feminine singular)
  • ces chanteurs (these singers - plural masculine or mixed gender)

Teacher explains that demonstratives must agree in gender and number with the noun they describe. The teacher models full sentences using professions and descriptive adjectives:

  • Ce médecin est courageux. (This doctor is brave - masculine)
  • Cette chanteuse est gentille. (This singer is kind - feminine)
  • Ces professeurs sont intelligents. (These teachers are intelligent - plural)

The teacher pronounces each sentence slowly and clearly, highlighting adjective agreement endings (-e for feminine, -s for plural) and asks students to repeat chorally and then individually.

Practical activity: Using flashcards or pictures of professions, the teacher shows each image and asks students to respond with a full sentence using the correct demonstrative adjective + profession + adjective. For example, when shown a picture of a female nurse:

  • Student: Cette infirmière est travailleuse. (This nurse is hardworking)

Following this, the teacher organizes a pair writing activity: each pair writes 3–4 sentences using different demonstrative adjectives combined with professions and adjectives learned in previous weeks. The teacher circulates, offering guidance and corrections.

To consolidate learning, the class is divided into teams for a group revision quiz covering vocabulary and grammar from Weeks 7–10, including professions, the verb être, possessive adjectives, descriptive adjectives, and demonstrative adjectives. The quiz is competitive, with teams answering oral questions and forming sentences on the board.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
Students actively participate in oral drills to practice demonstrative adjectives. They repeat and pronounce example sentences aloud as a class, then individually. In pairs, they compose written sentences using the demonstrative adjectives combined with professions and descriptive adjectives. Students collaborate during the quiz, recalling and applying all vocabulary and grammar topics learned so far. This collaborative revision enhances mastery and boosts confidence ahead of assessments.

Assessment Checks:
Teacher checks written sentences from pairs for correct use of ce, cette, ces and accurate adjective agreement in gender and number. During oral drills and the quiz, teacher listens carefully for proper sentence structure, pronunciation, and vocabulary usage. Feedback is given immediately to correct misunderstandings and reinforce learning.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Demonstrative adjectives must agree with the noun they modify:
    • ce → masculine singular (before consonant sound): ce policier
    • cette → feminine singular: cette boulangère
    • ces → plural (both genders): ces infirmiers, ces professeurs
  • Adjective agreement:
    • Masculine singular adjectives usually have no ending change (courageux)
    • Feminine adjectives typically add -e (gentille, travailleuse)
    • Plural adjectives add -s (intelligents)
  • Teacher emphasizes how combining demonstratives with professions and adjectives helps students describe people more fully in French.
  • This lesson reviews and integrates all grammar and vocabulary from previous weeks, preparing students well for the upcoming comprehensive assessment.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher reviews key points of demonstratives and sentence building. Class chants “ce, cette, ces” with examples.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Students write two sentences with demonstratives and professions.

Assignment (Expanded):
Students write a short descriptive paragraph using at least one demonstrative adjective, one profession, and one descriptive adjective.

Follow-up Activity:
Students revise all vocabulary from Weeks 7–11 in preparation for assessment.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Weaker students practice with simple demonstrative + noun combinations. Stronger students write extended sentences with adjectives. Teacher ensures equal participation in revision quiz.
