Subject: General science
Grade Level: Grade 5
Date: Week 35
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 35, Period 6
Topic: Responsible Citizenship and Climate Change
Sub-topic: What Responsible Citizens Can Do to Help Reduce the Effect of Climate Change

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. List practices that reduce carbon footprint.
  2. Explain the importance of recycling and renewable energy.
  3. State ways individuals and communities can help reduce climate change effects.
  4. Participate in practical activities like tree planting or energy conservation.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know about consequences of climate change.

Instructional Materials
Charts of recycling symbols, pictures of renewable energy, seedlings for planting, energy-saving devices.

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks: What can we do to protect our environment from climate change?

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  1. Introduction and Brainstorming:
  • Teacher asks learners: “What can people do to help protect the Earth and reduce the effects of climate change?”
  • Learners brainstorm in groups and list ideas such as planting trees, saving electricity, recycling, and reducing waste.
  • Teacher writes responses on the board.
  1. Definition and Explanation:
  • Responsible Citizens: People who take actions to care for the environment and reduce harm to the planet.
  • Key Practices to Reduce Climate Change:
    • Planting Trees: Trees absorb carbon dioxide, produce oxygen, and provide shade.
    • Conserving Energy: Turn off lights, fans, and electronic devices when not in use.
    • Reducing Waste and Recycling: Reuse materials, sort waste, and recycle plastics, paper, and metals.
    • Using Renewable Energy: Solar, wind, and hydro energy produce less pollution than fossil fuels.
    • Protecting Wildlife: Preserve natural habitats and avoid harming plants and animals.
  • Teacher explains how each action helps reduce greenhouse gases and slow climate change.
  1. Observation Activity:
  • Learners observe pictures showing:
    • Tree planting programs
    • Solar panels on rooftops
    • Waste separation and recycling bins
  • Learners discuss in groups which practices they can do at home or in school.
  1. Practical Activity:
  • Class Activity:
    • Plant a seedling in the school garden and discuss how it will help the environment.
    • Check unused lights, fans, or electronic devices in the classroom and turn them off to save energy.
  1. Examples to Reinforce Learning:
  • Planting trees in the community reduces carbon dioxide.
  • Using solar panels instead of kerosene lamps reduces smoke pollution.
  • Recycling bottles, paper, and cans reduces waste in landfills.
  • Families walking or cycling short distances instead of using cars reduces air pollution.

Assessment Checks:

  • Teacher asks:
    • “Mention one practice that reduces climate change.”
    • “What does recycling mean?”
    • “Why is tree planting important?”
  • Learners explain in their own words and give examples from home or community.
  • Peer assessment: Groups check each other’s participation in practical activities and discussions.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Responsible Citizens: People who take action to care for the environment.
  • Practices to Reduce Climate Change: Plant trees, conserve energy, recycle and reduce waste, use renewable energy, protect wildlife.
  • Importance: These actions reduce carbon footprint, decrease pollution, and help the planet stay healthy.
  • Community Action: Working together as a community makes a bigger impact.

Homework/Assignment:

  • List 3 actions you and your family can take to reduce climate change.
  • Draw a picture showing one practice (planting trees, recycling, or using solar energy).
  • Write one paragraph on why it is important to care for the environment and fight climate change.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher emphasizes individual and community responsibility. Learners summarize ways to reduce climate change effects.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Learners answer: 1. Mention one way to reduce climate change effects. 2. State one importance of recycling. 3. State one importance of tree planting. Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded): Learners should write down three ways they will personally help reduce climate change.

Follow-up Activity: Learners will participate in a community clean-up or energy conservation at home.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Teacher provides practical activities for active learners. Visual aids help learners who struggle with abstract ideas. Stronger learners can prepare awareness posters.
