  1. Find the percentage of a given number.
  2. Apply percentages to real-life situations like discounts and test scores.
  3. Solve word problems involving percent.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know how to convert percentages to fractions and decimals.

Instructional Materials
Mathematics textbook for Grade 5, flash cards, charts showing discounts and prices.

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks: “If you scored 20 out of 25 marks, what percentage did you get?”

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Definition & Method

  • To find the percent of a number, multiply the number by the percent expressed as a fraction (percent ÷ 100).
  • Formula:

Percent of a Number=Percent/100×Number

Worked Examples

  1. Simple Example:
    Find 20% of 80.

20/100×80=16

Answer: 16.

  1. More Examples:
    • 25% of 200 = (25/100 × 200) = 50.
    • 10% of 1,000 = (10/100 × 1,000) = 100.
    • 75% of 60 = (75/100 × 60) = 45.
    • 5% of 400 = (5/100 × 400) = 20.
    • 12% of 50 = (12/100 × 50) = 6.

Applications of Percentages in Real Life

  1. Discounts (Business & Shopping):
    A bag costs L$5,000. Discount = 10%.

10/100×5000=500

New Price = 5,000 – 500 = L$4,500.

Another example:
A shirt costs L$2,000. Discount = 25%.

25/100×2000=500

New Price = 2,000 – 500 = L$1,500.

  1. Profit and Loss (Trading):
A trader buys an item for L$200 and sells for L$240.
    Profit = 240 – 200 = L$40.
    Profit % = (40/200 × 100) = 20%.

Another example:
Cost Price = L$1,000, Selling Price = L$800.
Loss = 200.
Loss % = (200/1000 × 100) = 20%.

  1. Test Scores (Education):
    A student scores 36 out of 40.

36÷40×100=90%

Answer: 90%.

Another example:
A student gets 72 marks out of 80.

72÷80×100=90%

  1. Attendance (School Life):
There are 50 students in class. On Monday, 45 are present.

45÷50×100=90%

Attendance = 90%.

Another example:
Out of 30 lessons, a learner attends 27.

27÷30×100=90%

Learners’ Activities (Expanded)

  1. Individual Work: Learners solve classroom problems such as:
    • Find 30% of 60
    • Find 50% of 500
    • Find 15% of 200
  2. Group Activity:
    • Teacher provides prices of items (L$1000, L$2500, L$5000).
    • Learners calculate 10%, 20%, and 25% discounts on these items.
  3. Class Attendance Activity:
    • Teacher provides attendance figures.
    • Learners calculate the class attendance percent.
  4. Word Problems:
    • A farmer harvested 120 oranges. He sold 25% of them. How many did he sell?
    • A student got 18 correct answers out of 20 questions. What is the percentage score?
    • A trader bought goods for L$600 and sold them for L$750. Find the profit percent.

Assessment Checks

  1. What is 25% of 200?
  2. A bag costs L$4000. If a 10% discount is given, how much will you pay?
  3. A student scores 72 out of 90 in an exam. What is the percentage score?
  4. If 40 out of 50 students are present, what is the class attendance in percent?
  5. A trader buys a goat for L$5,000 and sells it for L$6,000. Find the profit percent.
  6. Find:
    • (a) 15% of 120
    • (b) 5% of 200
    • (c) 75% of 80

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Percentages are everywhere in daily life:
    • In business (discounts, profit, loss)
    • In education (test scores, attendance)
    • In finance (interest rates, taxes)
    • In health (success rate of treatments, medicine doses)
  • They help us compare fairly because everything is measured out of 100.
  • Mastering percentage allows learners to handle money problems, data analysis, and decision-making confidently.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher revises percent of numbers and real-life applications.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Find 15% of 60. Teacher collects and provides feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):
Solve: (a) Find 30% of 90 (b) A book costs L$2000, discount = 5%. Find new price.

Follow-up Activity:
Learners ask parents about discounts received in markets and calculate percent.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Use smaller numbers for weaker learners. Pair fast learners with slower ones in solving word problems.
