Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks learners to sing a short worship song or recite a short prayer. Teacher then asks, “Why do we pray or sing to God?” Learners respond with different answers. Teacher introduces the word “worship” and explains that it is giving honor and respect to God.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Full Definitions
  • Worship: Worship is the act of showing reverence, adoration, and devotion to God or a divine being. It involves expressing love, respect, gratitude, obedience, and surrender through words, actions, thoughts, and attitudes. Worship can be individual or communal and is a fundamental aspect of many religions.
  • Why People Worship: Humans worship to acknowledge the greatness of God, express thankfulness for life and blessings, seek guidance and forgiveness for wrongdoings, request blessings and protection, and to build and maintain a spiritual relationship with the divine.

  1. Explanations
  • Worship as a Way to Connect with God: Worship is a means by which believers communicate and connect deeply with God. It is through worship that they recognize God’s sovereignty and their dependence on Him.
  • Worship in Christianity:
Christianity teaches that worship is a combination of prayer, singing hymns and spiritual songs, reading and meditating on the Bible, attending church services, and giving tithes or offerings. These activities help Christians express their faith and receive spiritual nourishment.
  • Worship in Islam:
In Islam, worship is called ‘Ibadah’ and it includes the Five Pillars:
    • Salat (Prayer): Performed five times daily facing Mecca.
    • Sawm (Fasting): Especially during Ramadan to build self-discipline and empathy for the less fortunate.
    • Zakat (Almsgiving): Giving a portion of one’s wealth to those in need.
    • Shahada (Declaration of Faith): Affirming belief in one God and Muhammad as His prophet.
    • Hajj (Pilgrimage): A journey to Mecca, required once in a lifetime if possible.
Reading and reciting the Quran is also an important form of worship.
  • Worship in Traditional African Religion:
Traditional worship involves rituals like sacrifices, prayers, songs, drumming, dancing, and offerings to gods or ancestors. These acts honor spiritual forces believed to influence life and bring blessings, protection, or guidance.

  1. Demonstrations
  • Role-play 1: A child thanking God before eating — emphasizes gratitude.
  • Role-play 2: A Muslim child performing salat — demonstrating prayer steps (standing, bowing, prostrating).
  • Group Activity: Singing a hymn or traditional worship song together — showing communal worship.

  1. Examples
  • Christian Worship:
    • Attending Sunday church service.
    • Singing hymns like “Amazing Grace.”
    • Reading the Bible aloud in family devotion.
    • Giving a tithe during church offerings.
  • Islamic Worship:
    • Performing the five daily prayers.
    • Fasting from dawn to sunset during Ramadan.
    • Giving zakat to the poor.
    • Reciting verses from the Quran.
  • Traditional Religion Worship:
    • Offering kola nuts or food to ancestors.
    • Performing a dance during harvest festivals.
    • Sacrificing an animal for blessing or protection.
    • Singing sacred songs in the shrine.

  1. Assessments
  • Oral Questions:
    • What is worship?
    • Mention three reasons why people worship God.
    • Give two examples of worship practices in Christianity.
    • Give two examples of worship practices in Islam.
    • Give two examples of worship practices in Traditional Religion.
  • Written or Group Activity:
    • Learners list ways they personally worship or have seen worship practiced in their families or communities.
    • Learners explain why worship is important to them.

  1. Practical Activities
  • Reciting Definitions: Have learners recite aloud the meaning of worship and why people worship.
  • Role-Playing Worship Acts: In small groups, learners act out scenes such as a family praying before a meal, a Muslim child performing salat, or a group singing a hymn.
  • Drawing Activity: Learners draw pictures showing different forms of worship, like praying, singing, giving offerings, or dancing.
  • Sharing Experiences: Learners take turns sharing personal stories or experiences about how they worship at home, school, or places of worship like church, mosque, or shrine.
  • Listing Worship Practices: Learners create lists under headings: Worship at Home, Worship in School, Worship in Religious Places. This helps them connect the lesson with their daily life.

  1. Detailed Notes
  • Worship means honoring and serving God with love, respect, and obedience. It is an expression of gratitude, a plea for forgiveness, and a request for blessings.
  • Christianity teaches worship through prayer, singing hymns, reading the Bible, giving offerings, and participating in church activities.
  • Islam emphasizes worship through regular prayers (salat), fasting during Ramadan, giving alms (zakat), reading and reciting the Quran, and living according to Islamic teachings.
  • Traditional African Religion emphasizes worship through sacrifices, prayers, songs, dances, and respect for ancestors, which help maintain harmony between the spiritual and physical worlds.
  • Worship is important because it fosters closeness to God, brings peace and joy, strengthens moral living, and promotes harmony within communities.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher reviews the meaning of worship, reasons for worship, importance in different religions, and examples of worship practices.

Evaluation Method (Expanded): Exit slip/quiz: Write two reasons why people worship. Mention one worship practice from Christianity, one from Islam, and one from Traditional Religion. Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded): Write down five ways you can worship God this week at home or school.

Follow-up Activity: Learners will share in the next lesson how they practiced at least one act of worship at home.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Pair work for weaker learners, oral explanation for learners with reading difficulties, use of visuals for learners who learn better through pictures.
