Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Full Definitions
  • Offering: An offering is the act of giving something valuable—such as money, goods, or animals—to God or to others, as a way to express love, gratitude, obedience, and devotion. It is a symbolic gesture that shows a person’s thankfulness for God’s blessings and their commitment to follow His teachings.
  • Types of Offerings:
    • Tithes: A specific type of offering, usually 10% of a person’s income, given regularly to support the church and its activities.
    • Alms: Gifts given to the poor and needy as an act of charity.
    • Zakat: A compulsory form of almsgiving in Islam, one of the Five Pillars, given annually to support the less fortunate.
    • Sadaqah: Voluntary charity given at any time to help those in need.
    • First Fruits: The first produce or harvest given to God as a sign of gratitude.
    • Animal Sacrifice: Offering an animal during special religious festivals, such as Eid-el-Adha in Islam, symbolizing obedience and thankfulness.

  1. Explanations
  • Christianity and Offering:
In Christianity, offerings are part of worship and serve multiple purposes:
    • Tithes: Traditionally, Christians give 10% of their earnings to the church to support its work, such as paying pastors, maintaining the church building, and funding mission work.
    • Thanksgiving offerings: Given to express gratitude to God for blessings received.
    • First Fruits: Offering the first harvest or earnings to God as a sign of trust and thankfulness.
    • Alms: Giving to the poor and needy is a practical way to live out Jesus’ teachings of love and compassion.
  • Islam and Offering:
Islam places great importance on helping those in need through offerings:
    • Zakat: It is obligatory for Muslims who meet certain wealth criteria to give a fixed percentage (usually 2.5%) of their savings to the poor, thus purifying their wealth.
    • Sadaqah: A voluntary charity given anytime to support good causes or individuals in need.
    • Animal Sacrifice (Qurbani): During Eid-el-Adha, Muslims sacrifice animals like goats or sheep and share the meat with family, friends, and the poor, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience to God.
  • Importance of Offerings:
    Offerings are important because:
    • They show gratitude and obedience to God.
    • They support religious activities and places of worship.
    • They provide for the needs of the poor and vulnerable.
    • They invite God’s blessings upon the giver and the community.

  1. Demonstrations
  • Role-play 1: Learners act out putting money into a church offering basket during a service, expressing thanksgiving.
  • Role-play 2: Learners simulate Muslims giving zakat or sadaqah to poor community members, emphasizing charity and compassion.
  • Discussion: Learners explain how these acts show obedience to God and care for others.
  1. Examples
  • Christian Examples:
    • A family setting aside 10% of their income each month as tithes to support their church.
    • Donating food and clothes to the needy during a church outreach program.
    • Offering the first basket of harvested fruits at a thanksgiving service.
  • Islamic Examples:
    • A Muslim calculating and paying zakat annually to the mosque for distribution.
    • Giving sadaqah during Ramadan to help feed the hungry.
    • Performing animal sacrifice during Eid-el-Adha and sharing the meat with neighbors and the poor.

  1. Assessments
  • Oral Questions:
    • Define what an offering is.
    • Name two types of offerings in Christianity.
    • Name two types of offerings in Islam.
    • Explain one reason why people give offerings.
  • Written Activity:
    • Learners write a short paragraph on why offering is important in their own words.
    • List three different offerings they have learned about and identify which religion they belong to.
  1. Practical Activities
  • Recitation: Learners recite the meaning of offering and its importance aloud.
  • Role-Playing: Learners act out giving tithes, zakat, or alms in different settings.
  • Listing: Learners list types of offerings from Christianity and Islam and explain their purposes.
  • Group Discussion: Learners discuss how offerings help the community and show obedience to God.

  1. Detailed Notes
  • Offering means giving something valuable to God or others as a symbol of love, gratitude, and obedience.
  • Christians offer tithes (10% of income), thanksgiving gifts, first fruits, and alms to support their church and help the needy.
  • Muslims give zakat (compulsory charity), sadaqah (voluntary charity), and perform animal sacrifice during Eid-el-Adha as acts of devotion and social responsibility.
  • Offerings are important because they demonstrate thankfulness to God, provide for religious activities, support the poor, and bring spiritual blessings.
  • Giving offerings strengthens the relationship between individuals, their faith community, and God.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher reviews meaning of offering, types in Christianity and Islam, and their importance.

Evaluation Method (Expanded): Exit slip/quiz: Write one type of Christian offering and one type of Islamic offering. Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded): Write a short paragraph on how giving offerings can help your community.

Follow-up Activity: Learners will bring a small item to class (pencil, book, fruit) and share with another learner to practice the spirit of offering.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
