Checks and Balances is a system where each branch of government (Legislature, Executive, Judiciary) monitors and limits the powers of the others to prevent abuse of power.
Examples:
- The Legislature passes laws, but the President can veto them (Executive).
- The Judiciary can declare a law unconstitutional (checks Legislature).
- The Executive must get budget approval from the Legislature.
National Emblems are symbols that represent Liberia’s identity, history, and values. Key emblems include:
- Flag of Liberia
- Colors: Red (courage), White (moral excellence), Blue (liberty), and a single white star.
- Meaning: Represents freedom and unity.
- Coat of Arms
- Symbols: Palm tree, plow, ship, rising sun.
- Meaning: Agriculture, labor, commerce, hope, and liberty.
- National Anthem
- Importance: Unites citizens and shows patriotism.
- First line: (Teacher reads aloud and students follow).
- Lone Star
- Symbolism: Independence and freedom of Liberia.
- Pledge of Allegiance
- Words and significance: Expresses loyalty and commitment to the nation.
