Topic: Major Agro-Industries and Forestry
Sub-topic: Agro-Industries, Forestry, and Challenges
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Name some of the major agro-industries in prewar and present-day Liberia.
State the challenges affecting Liberia’s economic development.
Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
Basic farming activities and crops grown in Liberia.
Instructional Materials
Charts of agro-industries, maps, pictures of forests, videos on forestry.
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher asks students to name companies they know that produce rubber, palm oil, or other crops.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Input (Expanded & Detailed):
- Begin with a brainstorming question: “What big companies or farms in Liberia produce crops for sale or export?”
- Define Agro-Industries: industries that use agricultural products (crops/animals) to produce goods for sale, employment, and export.
Pre-war Major Agro-Industries in Liberia:
- Firestone Rubber Company (1926 – present)
- One of the oldest and largest rubber plantations in Liberia, located in Margibi County.
- Produced natural rubber for export and tire manufacturing.
- Created thousands of jobs before the war.
- Liberia Agricultural Company (LAC)
- Located in Grand Bassa County.
- Produced and exported rubber.
- Contributed to Liberia’s foreign income.
- Cavalla Rubber Corporation
- Located in Maryland County.
- Specialized in rubber production and export.
Present-Day Agro-Industries:
- Firestone, LAC, and Cavalla are still operating.
- Oil Palm Plantations such as Sime Darby and Equatorial Palm Oil are growing.
- Cocoa and coffee farms are re-emerging in Nimba, Bong, and Lofa counties.
Importance of Agro-Industries to Liberia:
- Provide jobs for thousands of Liberians.
- Earn foreign exchange through export of products like rubber and palm oil.
- Produce raw materials for manufacturing (rubber for tires, palm oil for soap and cooking).
- Support community development by building schools, clinics, and roads.
Forestry in Liberia:
- Definition: the management and use of forests and trees for timber, medicine, fuel, and wildlife.
- Importance:
- Provides wood for building, charcoal, and export.
- Forests are home to animals (elephants, monkeys, birds).
- Protects the soil from erosion and keeps the environment balanced.
Challenges in Forestry and Agro-Industries:
- Deforestation – cutting down too many trees without replacing them.
- Illegal Logging – people cutting and selling timber without government approval.
- Low Productivity – poor farming methods, pests, and diseases reduce yields.
- Poor Roads – bad road conditions make it hard to transport crops and timber to markets.
- Lack of Modern Machines – many farms still depend on manual labor.
Solutions:
- Replanting trees after cutting (afforestation).
- Government enforcing forestry laws.
- Training farmers in modern farming.
- Improving road networks.
- Attracting investment to modernize agro-industries.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
- In groups, students match agro-industries to their main crops (e.g., Firestone → rubber, Sime Darby → oil palm).
- Students identify locations of major agro-industries on a map of Liberia.
- Learners create a chart of challenges facing agro-industries/forestry and suggest possible solutions.
- Each group presents their findings to the class.
Assessment Checks:
- Oral Questions:
- “Name one pre-war agro-industry in Liberia.”
- “What crop does Firestone produce?”
- “What is deforestation?”
- “Mention two challenges facing forestry in Liberia.”
- Teacher Observation: Participation in group mapping and chart-making.
- Group Presentations: Evaluate clarity of explanations and suggested solutions.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed for Students):
- Agro-industries are companies that use farm crops to produce goods. Examples are Firestone, LAC, and Cavalla Rubber.
- They create jobs, support communities, and bring money into Liberia through exports.
- Forestry is the use of forests for timber, fuel, and wildlife protection. It helps the economy but faces challenges.
- Challenges include deforestation, illegal logging, low productivity, poor roads, and lack of modern machines.
- To solve these problems, Liberia needs to replant trees, enforce laws, improve roads, and modernize farming.
Practical Assignment:
- Draw a map of Liberia and mark the locations of three agro-industries (Firestone, LAC, Cavalla Rubber).
- Write one paragraph explaining why forestry is important for Liberia.
- List three challenges facing forestry and agro-industries in Liberia and suggest one solution for each
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
Teacher reinforces the role of agro-industries and forestry in Liberia and summarizes the main challenges.
Evaluation Method (Expanded)
Exit slip/quiz: Students list one prewar and one present-day agro-industry and a forestry challenge.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded):
Create a chart showing Liberia’s major agro-industries and forestry products.
Follow-up Activity:
Research a local forestry project or visit a plantation if possible.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Visual aids, group work, simplified charts, peer support for struggling learners.
