Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher shows a picture of a mountain and asks: “What do we call this type of landform?”
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher begins by defining physical features as natural landforms that shape the landscape, including mountains, rivers, lakes, plateaus, hills, capes, islands, and peninsulas. Teacher explains that these features influence climate, farming, settlement, and transportation. Teacher introduces Liberia’s major physical features, giving examples: Mount Nimba and Wologizi Mountains, Cape Mount and Cape Palmas, Lake Piso, St. Paul and Cavalla Rivers, and coastal peninsulas. Teacher demonstrates how to label these features on a map, showing their location relative to counties. Teacher also explains why these features are important: mountains can provide minerals, rivers provide water for farming and fishing, and lakes can support tourism and water supply.
Practical activities include tracing and labeling physical features on a blank map, using atlases or online maps to locate features, drawing diagrams of mountains and rivers, and discussing how each feature affects human activity. Teacher encourages students to make connections between local geography and national geography.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded)
• Students label major physical features of Liberia on an outline map, including mountains, rivers, lakes, and capes.
• In small groups, students describe a physical feature found in their local area, explaining its use and importance.
• Learners write short paragraphs about the importance of physical features, such as how rivers provide water, mountains contain minerals, or lakes support fishing and transportation.
• Students can create illustrated diagrams showing one physical feature and its impact on the environment or community.
Assessment Checks
• Teacher checks map labeling for accuracy.
• Oral questions such as: “Name two mountains in Liberia,” “Which river flows through Montserrado?” “Why are physical features important?”
• Short written responses on the importance of features like rivers, mountains, or lakes.
• Observation during group discussions and diagrams to ensure understanding of concepts.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
Assignments / Home Activities
• Draw and label a map of Liberia showing at least five physical features.
