A descriptive paragraph paints a picture with words. It allows the reader to see, hear, smell, taste, and feel what the writer is describing by using:

  • Precise vocabulary: Specific and rich word choices
  • Dominant impression: The overall feeling or mood the paragraph gives (e.g., peaceful, frightening, joyful)

Puddles formed, reflecting the trees like shattered mirrors. The air smelled of wet earth and blooming jasmine. I hugged my warm sweater, feeling its softness against my skin as a cold breeze tickled my cheeks. It was a day that made the world slow down and listen.

Discussion:

  • Sensory details: sight (dull gray sky), sound (whisper, roar), touch (softness of sweater), smell (wet earth)

    • Clear dominant impression (decide on tone/mood)
    • Use transitions to guide the reader (First, Then, Nearby, In the distance, Suddenly)

Presentation: Groups take turns reading their paragraphs aloud with expressive tone and emotion.
