Explanation

Sentence Examples

unhappy vs. displeased

Both express negative feelings but unhappy is broader (sad), displeased often shows mild irritation or dissatisfaction

He was displeased with the slow service.

careful vs. careless

Careful means cautious, careless means not cautious or negligent

➡️ Examples of Affixed Words

    • mislead — lead wrongly
    • preview — view beforehand

  1. Learners’ Activities (Expanded – 15–18 minutes)

🎯 Activity 1: Word-Matching Exercise

  • Provide learners with two columns: one with root words and affixes, the other with meanings or sentence halves.
  • Learners draw lines to match words with correct meanings or sentences.
  • Example list:
    • Words: redo, powerless, mislead, joyful, preview, amazement
    • Meanings: “to do again”, “full of joy”, “without power”, etc.

🌳 Activity 2: Create Word Family Trees

  • In groups, learners pick one root word (e.g., help) and write it in the middle of a chart paper.
  • Around it, they add prefixes and suffixes to form new words (e.g., helpful, helpless, helper, helping).
  • Each group presents their word family, explaining meanings.

✍️ Activity 3: Mini Spelling Bee

  • Conduct a friendly spelling bee focused on affixed words from the lesson.
  • Call out words and have learners spell aloud, encouraging correct pronunciation and recognition of prefixes/suffixes.

📝 Activity 4: Sentence Writing

  • Learners individually write 3 sentences using newly learned affixed words.
  • Encourage varied sentence types (statements, questions, negatives).
  • Example:
    • I had to redo the painting because of the wrong colors.
    • She was powerless to stop the storm.
    • The preview of the show was exciting.

  1. Assessment Checks
  • Observe learners during matching exercises and spelling bee for accuracy.
  • Review sentences for:
    • Correct word usage matching intended meanings
    • Proper sentence structure and grammar
    • Accurate spelling of affixed words
  • Ask learners to explain differences between similar words orally or in writing to check understanding.

  1. Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
  • Affixes help learners expand vocabulary and express ideas more precisely.
  • Using affixed words in sentences reinforces meaning and correct spelling.
  • Comparing similar words helps avoid confusion and improve word choice in writing and speaking.
  • Word family trees visualize relationships and deepen understanding of how words are connected.
  • Repetition and varied practice (matching, spelling, writing) build retention.
  • Encourage learners to use dictionaries or online resources for more affixed words and meanings.

  1. Extension Ideas
  • Create a classroom “Word Wall” with affixed words and their meanings.
  • Assign a homework activity: find 5 new affixed words in reading materials and write sentences.
  • Hold a vocabulary quiz next lesson on affixed words and their usage.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
