Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher starts a role-play with a student using être and avoir sentences. Students are asked to listen and then create their own quick examples.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

The teacher begins by explaining that today’s lesson will focus on putting together everything learned about auxiliary verbs être and avoir, and using them in sentences to talk about identity, possession, past actions, and future plans. This will help students communicate more fluently and confidently.

🟣 Role-play Introduction and Modeling

The teacher models simple oral role-plays using the auxiliary verbs in different tenses and contexts:

  • Identity/Description (être)
    • Tu es fatigué ?Oui, je suis fatigué.
    • (Are you tired? – Yes, I am tired.)
  • Possession (avoir)
    • Vous avez un livre ?Oui, nous avons un livre.
    • (Do you have a book? – Yes, we have a book.)
  • Past action (passé composé with être)
    • Hier, il est allé à l’école.
    • (Yesterday, he went to school.)
  • Future plan (futur proche with aller + avoir)
    • Demain, je vais avoir un chien.
    • (Tomorrow, I am going to have a dog.)

The teacher writes these examples on the board and reads them aloud slowly, emphasizing pronunciation and sentence structure.

🔵 Students’ Practice Activities

  1. Pair and Group Oral Role-plays:
Students work in pairs or small groups to create short dialogues using the auxiliaries être and avoir. They take turns asking and answering questions similar to the modeled examples. For example:
  • Student A: Tu es content ?
  • Student B: Oui, je suis content.
  • Student A: Tu as un stylo ?
  • Student B: Oui, j’ai un stylo.
  1. Dialogue Writing:
Students write their own short dialogues (4-6 sentences) combining the different uses of auxiliary verbs in present, past, and near future tenses.
  2. Oral Presentation:
Selected groups or pairs read their dialogues aloud to the class. Peers listen carefully and give constructive feedback, supported by the teacher.

🔍 Assessment Checks

  • The teacher circulates around the room during role-plays, listening carefully to the students’ pronunciation, correct use of auxiliaries, and sentence structure.
  • The teacher provides immediate correction and support where necessary.
  • Written dialogues are collected and checked for:
    • Proper conjugation of être and avoir in various tenses
    • Correct sentence construction
    • Appropriate vocabulary and tense consistency

🗒️ Notes (Expanded & Detailed)
