Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  • Apply rules for gender and number agreement of adjectives.
  • Transform adjectives into feminine and plural forms.
  • Identify and correct mistakes in adjective agreement.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know: singular masculine/feminine forms of basic adjectives.

Instructional Materials

  • Adjective charts, board, worksheets.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Teacher writes “un garçon grand / une fille ___” and asks students to fill in the missing form.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher explains the rules of adjective agreement in French with detailed examples:

  • To form the feminine singular, add -e to the masculine form (if it doesn’t already end with -e). Example:
    grand → grande
    joli → jolie
  • To form the masculine plural, add -s to the masculine singular form:
    grand → grands
    joli → jolis
  • To form the feminine plural, add -es to the feminine singular form:
    grande → grandes
    jolie → jolies

Teacher presents examples with different nouns to show these changes:
• un garçon grand (a tall boy)
• une fille grande (a tall girl)
• des garçons grands (tall boys)
• des filles grandes (tall girls)

Teacher writes these on the board, pronounces each carefully, and points out the visual and sound changes.

Practical Activities:
• Chart Completion: Students receive adjective tables with missing forms and fill in the feminine singular, masculine plural, and feminine plural forms of given adjectives.
• Group Work: In small groups, students correct sentences with adjective agreement errors (e.g., une garçon grandeun garçon grand).
• Oral Drill: Teacher reads a noun phrase in masculine singular, students say the correct feminine or plural form aloud.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
• Students practice transforming adjectives from masculine to feminine and singular to plural, both orally and in writing.
• Group drill where each group is given incorrect sentences and asked to identify and correct adjective agreement mistakes, then present their corrections to the class.
• Peer review of written work to reinforce understanding.

Assessment Checks:
• Teacher gives individual students sentences orally or in writing containing agreement errors and asks them to identify and correct the errors.
• Quick-fire questions to check student understanding of forming feminine and plural adjective forms.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
• Most French adjectives follow these regular patterns for agreement, making them predictable with practice.
• Some common irregular adjectives are introduced briefly:

  • beau → belle (beautiful)
  • gros → grosse (big/fat)
  • nouveau → nouvelle (new)
  • Students should be encouraged to memorize irregular forms gradually and pay attention to pronunciation changes.
    • Regular practice with charts, examples, and error correction builds strong understanding of adjective agreement rules essential for correct French grammar.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Summary: review rules with examples.

Evaluation Method (Expanded): quick written quiz converting adjectives to all four forms.

Assignment (Expanded): write 4 sentences showing different forms of the same adjective.

Follow-up Activity: preparing for expanded vocabulary and paragraph writing.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies: weaker students work with simple adjectives; stronger students use irregular ones.
