• Practice asking and answering basic questions using “quel”

Previous Knowledge
Students know gender of nouns (masculine/feminine) and plural forms.

Instructional Materials
Flashcards of nouns, charts showing adjective agreement, whiteboard, markers

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher displays two objects: un livre and une couleur (flashcards). Teacher asks: “Quel est ton livre ? Quelle est ta couleur ?” Students guess meaning.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Definition and Explanation:
The teacher introduces interrogative adjectives as special words used to ask "which" or "what" before a noun. These adjectives change based on the gender (masculine/feminine) and number (singular/plural) of the noun they describe.

The teacher explains that in French, there are four forms of the word "quel" (which/what), depending on the noun it describes:

  1. Quel – masculine singular
Quel livre est-ce ? (Which book is it?)
➤ Used with masculine singular nouns like livre (book), garçon (boy), cahier (notebook).
  2. Quelle – feminine singular
Quelle robe portes-tu ? (What dress are you wearing?)
➤ Used with feminine singular nouns like robe (dress), fille (girl), voiture (car).
  3. Quels – masculine plural
Quels garçons sont là ? (Which boys are there?)
➤ Used with masculine plural nouns like garçons (boys), livres (books).
  4. Quelles – feminine plural
Quelles filles arrivent ? (Which girls are arriving?)
➤ Used with feminine plural nouns like filles (girls), robes (dresses).

Visual Presentation and Pronunciation:

  • The teacher writes the four forms of “quel” on the board in a table format:

Masculine

Feminine

Singular: quel

Singular: quelle

Plural: quels

Plural: quelles

  • Teacher provides several common nouns and models how to choose the correct form:
    Quel cahier ?
    Quelle voiture ?
    Quels élèves ?
    Quelles maisons ?

Drill and Practice:

  • Whole-class repetition drill: The teacher says a sentence using a form of “quel,” and the students repeat after the teacher.
  • The teacher emphasizes pronunciation, gender agreement, and plural endings.

Examples for oral repetition:
Quel jour sommes-nous ?
Quelle est ta couleur préférée ?
Quels films aimes-tu ?
Quelles chansons écoutes-tu ?

Guided Practice – Fill-in-the-Blank Exercise (Board or Notebook):
Students are given sentences where they must insert the correct form of “quel”:

  1. ______ jour est-ce ? (quel)
  2. ______ chaussures portes-tu ? (quelles)
  3. ______ est ton livre préféré ? (quel)
  4. ______ sont tes matières préférées ? (quelles)
  5. ______ animal préfères-tu ? (quel)

Pair Work and Speaking Activity:
Students work in pairs and ask each other simple questions using "quel/quelle/quels/quelles". Each pair must ask and answer at least four questions, such as:

  • Quel est ton jeu préféré ?
  • Quelle boisson aimes-tu ?
  • Quels animaux aimes-tu ?
  • Quelles matières étudies-tu ?

Written Task (Notebook Work):
Each student writes 4–6 original questions using the correct form of “quel,” ensuring:

  • 2 questions use masculine singular/plural nouns
  • 2 questions use feminine singular/plural nouns

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
✓ Practice repeating each form aloud (individually and in groups)
✓ Fill in blanks with the correct interrogative adjective
✓ Conduct pair interviews using prepared or original questions
✓ Write questions independently and check with peers or teacher
✓ Read sentences or questions aloud for pronunciation practice

Assessment Checks:
✔ Teacher moves around during pair work, listening to ensure correct form usage
✔ Individual students are asked to read one of their written questions aloud
✔ Written exercises are checked for correct gender and number agreement
✔ Oral quizzes: Teacher gives a noun (e.g., fille) and asks: “Quel, quelle, quels, or quelles?” – students respond accordingly.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Interrogative adjectives are essential for asking specific questions about people, things, or choices.
  • They must agree with the noun they describe in gender and number.
  • These adjectives are different from regular “quel” used without nouns (e.g., Quel est ton nom ?). Here, they always precede a noun.
  • Mastery of this structure allows learners to ask clearer, more grammatically correct questions and enhances both oral and written communication.
  • Emphasizing speaking, listening, reading, and writing within the same lesson strengthens overall language development.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher reviews four forms of “quel” and examples. Quick oral quiz: Teacher asks incomplete sentences; students shout correct form.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip: Complete two sentences with the right form of “quel.”

Assignment (Expanded):
Write 4 sentences using each form of “quel.”

Follow-up Activity:
Students interview one another using “quel” questions and report back.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Pair stronger and weaker learners for oral practice. Use visual noun cards to reinforce gender.
