Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Teacher greets students in French and asks quick oral questions: “Quelle saison est-ce?” “Quel temps fait-il aujourd’hui?”

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
The teacher begins by revising all key vocabulary previously taught: seasons (l’hiver, le printemps, l’été, l’automne), common weather expressions (Il fait chaud, Il pleut, Il fait froid, Il fait beau), and clothing items (manteau, chaussures, chapeau, bottes). The teacher writes the words and phrases on the board for visual reinforcement and models pronunciation clearly. Learners practice oral repetition chorally and individually to build confidence and correct pronunciation.

Next, the teacher organizes a role-play activity in pairs where students practice asking and answering questions related to seasons, weather, and clothing. An example dialogue is demonstrated by the teacher or a pair of students:

  • Student A: “Quel temps fait-il en juin?” (What is the weather like in June?)
  • Student B: “Il pleut.” (It is raining.)
  • Student A: “Qu’est-ce que tu portes?” (What are you wearing?)
  • Student B: “Je porte des bottes.” (I am wearing boots.)

After modeling, pairs practice similar dialogues using different seasons, weather conditions, and clothing vocabulary. The teacher circulates, providing guidance, correcting pronunciation, and ensuring sentence structure is accurate. To extend practice, the class divides into small groups for rapid question-and-answer drills where learners take turns asking and responding.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Oral repetition drills of vocabulary and phrases.
  • Pair role-plays using provided dialogue models and creating variations.
  • Small group quick-fire questions and answers on seasons, weather, and clothing.
  • Listening and responding to peers to build conversational skills.

Assessment Checks:

  • The teacher listens to role-plays and group drills, noting pronunciation accuracy and correct sentence usage.
  • Provides immediate feedback to individuals or pairs as needed.
  • Informally assesses fluency, confidence, and comprehension during oral practice.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • This lesson integrates vocabulary across themes to encourage practical conversational use.
  • Role-plays simulate real-life interactions, making learning relevant and engaging.
  • Correct pronunciation and sentence structure are emphasized to build a solid foundation.
  • Combining seasons, weather, and clothing vocabulary enhances students’ ability to describe everyday situations in French.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Teacher summarizes lesson by asking groups to perform a short dialogue in French.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Students answer one written question: “Write two French sentences about weather and clothing.”

Assignment (Expanded): Write a short paragraph (5 sentences) describing a day in a season, including weather and clothing.

Follow-up Activity: Practice a French dialogue with a friend or family member at home.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Learners struggling with speaking can use cue cards. Advanced learners create longer dialogues with additional vocabulary.
