Subject: Physical Education
Grade Level: Grade 6
Date: Week 27
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 27, Period 5
Topic: Gymnastic Activities (Stunts) & Track & Field Skills
Sub-topic: Linking Gymnastics with Athletics

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
Identify gymnastic stunts and athletics skills
Demonstrate forward roll, log roll, and safe landing
Practice running posture, starts, jumping, and throwing basics safely

Previous Knowledge
Students already know simple jumps and rolls from play

Instructional Materials
Mats, cones, whistle, small objects for throwing

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Students do arm and leg stretches followed by two forward rolls. Teacher asks: Why is it important to land safely when you roll?

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Explanations (Expanded & Detailed):

  1. Gymnastic Stunts
    • Forward Roll: Learners are told to squat down, tuck the chin to the chest, keep arms close, and roll forward on a rounded back to come up to standing.
    • Log Roll: Learners lie flat on the mat with arms stretched overhead and roll sideways like a log without bending the knees.
    • Safe Landing: Bend knees on landing, keep arms forward for balance, and avoid stiff legs to reduce injury.
    • Rules: Always tuck the head in rolls, round the back, and land softly with bent knees.
  2. Track & Field Skills
    • Running Posture and Starts:
      • Standing start: Stand behind the line, one foot forward, lean slightly forward, push off with back leg.
      • Crouch start: Kneel with one knee down, hands on the ground behind the line, push off explosively when rising.
    • Jumping Form (Long Jump): Run with speed, take-off before the board, swing arms forward, bend knees in the air, and land with feet together.
    • Throwing Basics: Using beanbags or small balls, learners stand behind the line, step forward with the opposite foot, and throw smoothly with follow-through.
    • Rules:
      • Rolls – tuck head, rounded back, no rushing.
      • Long jump – take-off before board, land in pit or marked safe zone.
      • Throwing – stand behind line, no crossing over before release.

Teacher Demonstrations (Practical Drills):

  • Teacher performs forward roll and log roll slowly on mats.
  • Teacher shows standing and crouch start with short sprints.
  • Teacher demonstrates a long jump with proper form and a safe throw with beanbags.
  • Learners observe, then repeat under supervision.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Learners are divided into stations:
    • Gymnastics Station: Practice forward roll, log roll, and safe landing on mats.
    • Athletics Station: Practice running starts (standing and crouch) with cones, short jumps with marked take-off points, and throws using beanbags or balls.
  • Learners rotate between stations after 5–7 minutes.
  • Groups give peer feedback: e.g., “You tucked your head well” or “You landed with stiff legs, try bending knees more.”

Assessment Checks:

  1. Teacher questions:
    • Name two stunts and two track skills.
    • Why should you tuck your head during a roll?
    • What is the rule for long jump take-off?
  2. Teacher observation:
    • Posture in rolls (tucked head, rounded back).
    • Running starts (balanced push-off).
    • Safe landing in jumps and throws.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Gymnastics develops balance, flexibility, and coordination. Learning to roll and land safely prevents injuries during play or sports.
  • Athletics (Track & Field) builds speed, strength, endurance, and power. Running, jumping, and throwing are basic skills used in many sports.
  • When combined, gymnastics and athletics give learners all-round physical ability, making them stronger, safer, and more confident in movement.

Assignment (to extend learning):

  1. Draw and label two gymnastic stunts (forward roll, log roll).
  2. Write the steps of the crouch start in your notebook.
  3. At home, practice safe landing by jumping off a low step 10 times and record what you did to keep yourself safe.
  4. Observe a sporting event (live or on TV) and list two track skills and one field skill you saw.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Students recap stunts and athletics skills practiced and mention their importance.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Write one stunt and one track skill with its benefit.
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded): Students will draw a forward roll and a sprint start in their notebooks.

Follow-up Activity: Learners practice safe landings and short sprints at home.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Learners unable to roll or jump take part in stretching and act as helpers.
