Teacher’s Name:
Subject: Physical Education
Grade Level: Grade 6
Date: Week 8
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 8, Period 2
Topic: Gymnastics
Sub-topic: Backward Roll
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to define gymnastics as a sport, demonstrate a simple backward roll with guidance, and explain how gymnastics develops motor skills, flexibility, and balance while practicing safety rules.
Previous Knowledge
Students have seen or tried forward rolls and other simple exercises in previous PE lessons.
Instructional Materials
Exercise mats, demonstration videos or posters of rolls, whistle, chalkboard.
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Students perform light stretching, neck rotations, and forward rolls. Teacher asks: “Have you ever tried to roll backward safely?”
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Explanations & Demonstrations:
- Definition of Gymnastics:
- Gymnastics is a sport that involves exercises, tumbling, and movements which develop flexibility, strength, balance, agility, and coordination.
- It is one of the oldest sports, practiced for both fitness and recreation.
- Examples: Floor exercises, vaulting, balance beam, parallel bars, rolls, flips, and cartwheels.
- Introduction of Backward Roll:
- Teacher explains that the backward roll is a basic tumbling movement where the body rolls backward on the mat in a smooth, controlled way.
- Step-by-step demonstration:
- Step 1: Start from a squatting position with knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
- Step 2: Tuck the chin firmly to the chest to protect the neck.
- Step 3: Place both hands with palms facing upward near the shoulders.
- Step 4: Roll backward slowly over the shoulders (not the head).
- Step 5: Push with hands against the floor to help lift hips and flip.
- Step 6: Finish in a sitting or standing position.
- Safety Rules:
- Always use mats for soft landing.
- Do not roll on the head or stiff neck — keep chin tucked to chest.
- Perform in a clear space, free from obstacles.
- Do not push or rush while rolling; movements should be controlled.
- Teacher demonstrates slowly before students try.
- Benefits of Backward Roll / Gymnastics:
- Improves coordination and balance.
- Increases flexibility and muscle strength.
- Develops self-confidence and body control.
- Encourages discipline, patience, and safety awareness.
Practical Activities:
- Observation Practice:
- Students watch the teacher demonstrate the backward roll twice — first in slow motion and then normally.
- Preparation Drill:
- Learners practice squatting and tucking chin without rolling to understand posture.
- Practice lying back and rocking gently to build confidence.
- Group Practice:
- In pairs, one student rolls while the other observes for correct chin tuck and hand placement.
- Teacher supervises, correcting postures.
- Discussion & Reflection:
- Students discuss how they felt during the roll: Was it easy? Did they feel balanced?
- Groups share their experience with the class.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
- Watch teacher’s demonstration attentively.
- Practice squatting and tucking chin posture.
- Attempt backward rolls on mats in turns.
- Support and encourage peers during practice.
- Participate in group reflection about challenges and improvements.
Assessment Checks:
- Teacher asks oral questions:
- “What is gymnastics?” (A sport with exercises that improve flexibility, strength, and coordination).
- “Why do we tuck the chin during a backward roll?” (To protect the neck).
- “Mention two benefits of gymnastics.” (Improves balance, flexibility, strength, coordination, or confidence).
- Teacher observes technique: Are students keeping chin tucked? Are they rolling over shoulders and not the head?
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
- Gymnastics is a sport that develops agility, coordination, and flexibility through exercises and tumbling.
- The backward roll is a basic tumbling skill where a person rolls backward safely over the shoulders.
- Proper safety awareness and technique are very important to avoid injuries.
- Gymnastics not only strengthens muscles and improves balance but also builds confidence and discipline.
Assignment (Take-Home):
- Write down the six steps of a backward roll in your notebook.
- Draw and label a simple diagram showing the squatting starting position of the backward roll.
- List three safety rules you must follow while practicing gymnastics.
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Students summarize the steps of a backward roll. Teacher reinforces safety and encourages practice.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Students write the definition of gymnastics and list two safety rules for backward roll. Teacher reviews responses.
Assignment (Expanded):
Students should practice simple stretching and balancing at home, such as standing on one leg for 30 seconds.
Follow-up Activity:
Next lesson will expand into human growth and development.
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Students with less flexibility practice squatting and tucking without full roll. Teacher provides mats and personal assistance.
