Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask students to share what they think happens after death and why people hope for eternal life.
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher Explanation:
The teacher begins by defining eternal life as life that continues after physical death. This belief is shared in different ways across Christianity, Islam, and African Traditional Religions (ATR). Though the interpretations vary, all emphasize the idea that life does not end at death and that how people live now affects what happens after death.
- Eternal Life in Christianity:
Christians believe that eternal life means living forever with God in heaven after death. It is a gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ.
- Scriptural Example: John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
- Christians believe that by living righteously—loving others, forgiving, avoiding sin, and following Jesus’ teachings—they will be rewarded with eternal life.
- Eternal Life in Islam:
In Islam, eternal life refers to life in Jannah (Paradise), a place of peace and happiness for those who obey Allah and live righteously.
- Scriptural Example: Qur’an 2:25 – “Give glad tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that for them are gardens beneath which rivers flow...”
- Muslims believe that through good deeds, prayer, charity, fasting, and obedience to Allah, they will enter Paradise after the Day of Judgment.
- Eternal Life in African Traditional Religion:
Traditional African beliefs teach that after death, the soul continues to live as an ancestor. Ancestors are respected and remembered through rituals.
- Eternal life in ATR means being honored by the living and influencing the family or community spiritually.
- Good living ensures one becomes a respected ancestor, while wrongdoing may result in being forgotten or rejected by the spirit world.
How Eternal Life Influences Daily Life:
- People are encouraged to live morally—telling the truth, being kind, obeying religious laws, and avoiding wrongdoing.
- Belief in eternal life gives people hope, especially during hard times, illness, or death.
- It encourages believers to seek forgiveness, pray, help others, and respect their elders and traditions.
Practical Discussion Activity:
Teacher leads a discussion with the class:
- “How does the belief in eternal life help people live better today?”
- Students share what they think people do differently when they believe there is life after death.
Examples may include avoiding stealing, showing kindness, attending religious services, and living peacefully with others.
Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
- Students share personal ideas on what eternal life means to them or their families.
- In pairs or small groups, they read and discuss the scriptures: John 3:16 and Qur’an 2:25.
- Students list three ways belief in eternal life affects behavior.
- As a class, they create a poster showing how Christians, Muslims, and traditional believers view eternal life.
Assessment Checks:
Teacher conducts oral questioning and written Q&A. Examples:
- “What is eternal life?”
- “What does the Bible say about eternal life?”
- “What is Jannah in Islam?”
- “How do traditional religions view life after death?”
Teacher checks for understanding through students’ answers, group discussions, and written reflections.
Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Eternal life is the belief in life after death.
- In Christianity, it is life with God through faith in Jesus Christ.
- In Islam, it is the reward of Jannah (Paradise) for believers and those who do righteous deeds.
- In African Traditional Religion, eternal life means the continued existence of the spirit among ancestors.
This belief helps people live with purpose, hope, and discipline, knowing that their actions have eternal consequences.
