- Definition of Culture and Customs
- Culture is the way of life of a people. It includes their beliefs, values, behaviors, arts, language, music, food, and traditions.
- Customs are practices or behaviors that are common to a group of people, passed down from one generation to another.
- Example: In Liberia, greeting elders with respect is a custom.
- Importance of Cultural Norms and Patterns in Uniting Communities
- Cultural norms are rules that guide how people behave in society.
- They promote peace, order, and unity among people.
- Example: Respecting elders ensures harmony in families and communities.
- Example: Sharing food during festivals promotes togetherness.
- Examples of Liberian Cultural Practices
- Greetings: Handshakes, bowing slightly, using respectful titles like “Ma,” “Pa,” “Uncle,” or “Auntie.”
- Respect for Elders: Standing when an elder enters, listening attentively, offering seats.
- Dressing: Traditional clothes like lappa, country cloth, and dashiki.
- Traditional Ceremonies: Weddings, naming ceremonies, initiation rites, festivals like Independence Day celebrations.
- Differences Between Urban and Rural Customs
- Urban Areas:
- Use of modern clothing (jeans, suits, t-shirts).
- Influence of technology, media, and global culture.
- Ceremonies often more modernized with music and DJs.
- Rural Areas:
- Stronger attachment to traditional dressing (country cloth, lappa).
- Ceremonies led by elders and traditional societies.
- Use of local music and drums at gatherings.
- Core values remain the same: respect, unity, and cooperation.
