Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask learners to name African cities they know and discuss what life might be like in crowded cities.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Explanations & Discussions

  1. Fifteen Biggest Cities in Africa by Population
Introduce with a map of Africa showing population clusters. Examples (approximate populations in millions, 2025 est.):
  • Lagos, Nigeria (23M+) – commercial capital, heavy traffic, seaport.
  • Cairo, Egypt (21M+) – historical city, Nile River, industries.
  • Kinshasa, DR Congo (17M+) – French-speaking largest city in Africa.
  • Johannesburg, South Africa (15M+) – gold mining, industries.
  • Nairobi, Kenya (7M+) – center of East Africa, tourism, UN offices.
  • Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (6M+) – African Union headquarters.
  • Others: Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Casablanca (Morocco), Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Dakar (Senegal), Khartoum (Sudan), Luanda (Angola), Alexandria (Egypt), Algiers (Algeria), Cape Town (South Africa).

Teacher explains that Africa is urbanizing rapidly – more people move to cities for jobs, schools, and better life.

  1. Problems of Overpopulation in Cities
  • Unemployment: Too many job seekers, few jobs.
  • Slums & Poor Housing: People live in crowded, unsafe areas.
  • Poor Sanitation: Garbage piles up, diseases spread.
  • Traffic Congestion: Too many vehicles, few roads.
  • Crime: Pickpocketing, theft, violence increase.
  • Pollution: Air pollution from cars, water pollution from industries.
Teacher links with Monrovia, Liberia – growing urban population, similar challenges.
  1. Comparisons and Solutions
  • Compare Lagos with Monrovia (Lagos = mega city, Monrovia = smaller but facing same problems).
  • Solutions:
    • Better urban planning (roads, drainage, housing).
    • Education (skills to reduce unemployment).
    • Sanitation campaigns (clean-ups, waste management).
    • Improved transport systems (buses, railways).
    • Law enforcement and job creation.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded)

  • Map Activity: Learners locate Lagos, Cairo, Kinshasa, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Monrovia on blank maps.
  • Group Work: Each group identifies one urban problem (e.g., traffic, housing, sanitation) and writes down 2 solutions.
  • Presentations: Groups present findings; teacher moderates and corrects.
  • Class Debate: “Overpopulation: a problem or an opportunity?”

Assessment Checks

  • Oral Questions:
  1. Name three of the biggest cities in Africa.
  2. What is one problem of overpopulation?
  3. Suggest one solution to reduce traffic congestion.
  • Written Quick Test:
    • Fill in the blanks:
      • The capital city of Kenya is ________.
      • The largest city in Africa is ________.
      • One effect of poor sanitation is ________.
  • Group Presentations: Teacher checks feasibility of solutions.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed)

  • Africa’s biggest cities are economic, political, and cultural centers but face serious overpopulation problems.
  • Problems include unemployment, slums, poor sanitation, traffic congestion, pollution, and crime.
  • Liberia’s Monrovia, though smaller, shares similar urban challenges.
  • Education and urban planning are key solutions to make cities more livable.
  • Students should see the link between population growth and quality of life in African cities.

Assignment (Homework)

  1. Draw a simple table showing 5 major African cities, their countries, and main economic activities.
  2. Write three urban problems Monrovia faces and suggest one solution for each.
  3. Imagine you are the mayor of Lagos: Write a short paragraph on how you would solve the traffic problem.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: Recap major cities, problems, and solutions for overpopulation
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
Exit slip/quiz: Name two African cities and one urban problem
Teacher will collect slips and provide oral feedback
Assignment (Expanded): Prepare a poster showing problems and solutions of overpopulation in African cities
Follow-up Activity: Discuss urban planning strategies for Monrovia
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
Use visuals and maps for learners who struggle with text
Encourage peer discussion to support ideas
