Step 1 – Introduction of Major National Holidays

  • The teacher defines national holidays as special days set aside by the government to remember important events or people in a country’s history.
  • Teacher introduces and explains the following national holidays in Liberia:
  1. Independence Day (July 26): Celebrates Liberia’s independence from the American Colonization Society in 1847; a day of patriotism, parades, and cultural programs.
  2. Armed Forces Day (February 11): Honors the men and women of the Liberian army who protect the nation; includes military parades.
  3. Flag Day (August 24): Commemorates the adoption of the Liberian flag in 1847; schools and organizations celebrate by raising flags.
  4. Thanksgiving (First Thursday of November): Day of prayer, gratitude, and reflection on God’s blessings; families gather for worship and feasting.
  5. J. Roberts Day (March 15): Honors Liberia’s first president, Joseph Jenkins Roberts, for his leadership during independence.
  6. William V.S. Tubman’s Birthday (November 29): Celebrates the life of President Tubman, remembered for promoting national unity and development during his long presidency.

Step 2 – Significance of Each Holiday

  • The teacher explains how each holiday is important for fostering unity, patriotism, and national pride.
  • Examples:
    • Independence Day promotes patriotism and reminds Liberians of their freedom.
    • Armed Forces Day encourages respect for national defense.
    • Flag Day teaches loyalty and unity.
    • J.J. Roberts Day and Tubman’s Birthday honor national heroes.
    • Thanksgiving builds gratitude and togetherness.

Step 3 – Linking Holidays to Liberia’s History and Culture

  • The teacher explains that holidays are not just for enjoyment but are tied to Liberia’s struggles, achievements, and values.
  • Example: The flag’s red and white stripes represent courage and moral excellence; the blue square symbolizes liberty.
  • Discuss how Independence Day is linked to the founding fathers and the declaration of independence in 1847.
  • Connect Thanksgiving to Liberia’s Christian cultural heritage.

Practical Demonstration

  • Teacher displays a chart/timeline on the board with the months of the year. Learners place each holiday in the correct month and write its significance.
  • Teacher shows pictures of celebrations, flags, and parades to reinforce cultural connections.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded)

  1. Learners list the holidays on the board.
  2. In pairs, learners match holidays with their historical significance. Example: Flag Day – adoption of the national flag.
  3. Each pair selects one holiday and prepares a short oral presentation (2–3 minutes) describing its date, meaning, and how Liberians celebrate it.
  4. Learners complete their timeline of holidays and significance in their exercise books.

Assessment Checks

  • Oral questions:
    • “What holiday do we celebrate on July 26?”
    • “Why do we observe Armed Forces Day?”
  • Teacher checks timelines for completeness and accuracy.
  • Teacher evaluates group presentations for clarity and correct information.
