Show logos of AU, ECOWAS, SADC, etc., and ask learners if they recognize them. Discuss why countries might cooperate.

- African Union (AU)
- History: Formed in 2001, replacing the Organization of African Unity (OAU, 1963).
- Headquarters: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
- Objectives: Promote unity and peace, encourage economic development, defend human rights, solve conflicts.
- Example: The AU sends peacekeepers to war-torn countries like Sudan and Somalia.
- Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)
- Founded: 1975.
- Headquarters: Abuja, Nigeria.
- Objectives: Promote free trade, movement of people, and political cooperation among West African countries.
- Example: ECOWAS passports allow citizens of member states (including Liberia) to travel freely across borders.
- Mano River Union (MRU)
- Countries: Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Ivory Coast.
- Objectives: Strengthen cooperation in agriculture, trade, and peace in the Mano River Basin.
- Example: After civil wars, MRU supported peace talks between Liberia and Sierra Leone.
- Southern African Development Community (SADC)
- Countries: 16 southern African states.
- Headquarters: Gaborone, Botswana.
- Objectives: Promote economic growth, free trade, and cooperation in transport, mining, and education.
- Example: SADC encourages trade of goods like maize, sugar, and minerals across the region.
- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)
- Countries: 21 member states across eastern and southern Africa.
- Headquarters: Lusaka, Zambia.
- Objectives: Build a large trading market, reduce tariffs, and improve transport links.
- Example: COMESA promotes the sale of maize and livestock between Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia.
- West African Rice Development Association (WARDA, now AfricaRice)
- Objective: Improve rice farming, provide research, and help farmers grow more rice.
- Example: WARDA introduced improved rice varieties that grow well in both dry and swampy areas.
- East African Community (EAC)
- Countries: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, DRC.
- Headquarters: Arusha, Tanzania.
- Objectives: Strengthen trade, build roads, create common laws, promote peace and cooperation.
- Example: EAC citizens can move easily across borders for trade and work.
