Topic: Exercise: Forward Roll (Practical Session)
Sub-topic: Technique, safety measures, spotting, and drills

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate correct forward roll technique step by step.
  2. Apply appropriate safety measures and spotting techniques during practice.
  3. Build confidence and mastery through repeated drills of forward roll exercises.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Fundamental gymnastics skills including balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination.
• Safety rules and warm-up routines for gymnastics practice.

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Physical education textbooks for Grade 7
• Teaching aids: Gymnastics mats, cones, posters or charts showing forward roll steps, videos demonstrating technique
• Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• “Who has tried a forward roll before?”
• “What do you think is the most important safety measure for performing a forward roll?”
The teacher will record responses on the board.
Teacher’s Role: Lead warm-up exercises emphasizing neck, back, and shoulder flexibility; clarify misconceptions and engage students in discussion.
Learner’s Role:
• Share prior experiences with forward rolls.
• Participate actively in warm-up exercises and discussion.

B – BUILDING KNOWLEDGE (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:
• Demonstrate and guide step-by-step forward roll technique:

  • Starting position: squat with feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Tuck the head to protect the neck.
  • Roll along the back in a controlled motion.
  • Finish with feet flat and balanced.
    • Explain and demonstrate safety measures:
  • Ensure mats are properly positioned.
  • Use hands to support the roll and avoid injury.
  • Maintain adequate spacing to prevent collisions.
    • Teach spotting techniques: assisting peers safely during the roll.
    • Conduct drills: repeated practice under teacher supervision to build confidence and mastery.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
• Practice forward rolls individually, focusing on proper technique.
• Pair up to provide spotting support for peers.
• Receive teacher feedback and correct mistakes.
• Perform repeated drills to reinforce skill, confidence, and safety awareness.
• Observe peers and provide constructive feedback.

Assessment Checks:
• Practical demonstrations:

  • “Demonstrate the correct forward roll.”
  • “Explain one safety measure and show spotting technique.”
  • “Perform three consecutive forward rolls with proper technique.”
    • Teacher observes control, posture, and safety adherence.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
• Forward rolls enhance flexibility, coordination, and confidence.
• Proper safety measures, including mats and spotting, prevent injuries.
• Repeated practice reinforces muscle memory and skill mastery.
• Peer observation and feedback improve learning outcomes and promote teamwork.

Practical Activities:

  • Perform forward rolls in a line, each student rolling consecutively with spacing.
  • Pair students for spotting drills, alternating roles.
  • Teacher-led review: students demonstrate a series of three forward rolls to consolidate learning.

Assignment:

  • Draw and label the steps of a forward roll.
  • Write a short paragraph: “Explain why safety measures and spotting are important during gymnastics practice.”
  • Practice forward rolls at home or school and note three improvements observed after repeated practice.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• Teacher will ask students to recall the steps of a forward roll, key safety measures, and proper spotting techniques.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students will write short answers to:

  1. List the steps for performing a forward roll.
  2. State one safety measure to follow during practice.
  3. Describe how spotting helps during forward roll practice.
Teacher will collect and quickly review for understanding
    • Provide oral feedback before class ends
Assignment (Expanded): Students will practice forward rolls at home or school with supervision, noting progress and areas needing improvement.

Follow-up Activity: In the next lesson, students will perform forward rolls in combination with other basic tumbling exercises to create a short floor routine.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Provided with one-on-one guidance, simplified steps, and extra spotting support.
• Advanced Learners: Challenge with smoother transitions and combining forward rolls into sequences.
• Students with Disabilities: Supported with adapted mats, peer assistance, and modified rolling techniques.
