Teacher’s Name:
Subject: Physical Education
Grade Level: Grade 7
Date:
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 22, Period 4
Topic: Field Events – High Jump Basics, Skills, and Techniques
Sub-topic: Equipment, rules, approach, take-off, bar clearance, landing, and safety

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the equipment used in high jump and explain basic rules.
  2. Demonstrate proper approach, take-off, bar clearance, and landing techniques.
  3. Explain safety measures and identify common mistakes in high jump.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Basics of track events including sprinting and running techniques.
• General safety practices in athletics.

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Physical education textbooks for Grade 7
• Teaching aids: High jump mat, bar, markers, cones, videos showing proper high jump techniques
• Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• “Has anyone seen or attempted a high jump before?”
• “What do you think is important for clearing the bar safely?”
The teacher will record responses on the board.
Teacher’s Role: Lead warm-up exercises, encourage discussion, and highlight key points about high jump.
Learner’s Role:
• Share experiences or observations related to high jump.
• Participate actively in warm-up discussion.

B – BUILDING KNOWLEDGE (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:
• Explain and demonstrate high jump fundamentals:

  • Equipment: High jump mat, crossbar, and approach markers.
  • Rules: Proper approach, allowed attempts, bar clearance, and measurement of jumps.
  • Approach: Consistent run-up with correct stride pattern to build momentum.
  • Take-off: Push off from one foot with maximum force for height.
  • Bar clearance: Correct body positioning over the bar to avoid knocking it down.
  • Landing: Safe landing on the mat to prevent injury.
  • Safety measures: Check equipment, ensure proper warm-up, maintain safe spacing to avoid collisions.
  • Common mistakes: Incorrect stride, poor take-off, unsafe landing, and failure to observe rules.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
• Take detailed notes and ask questions.
• Observe teacher demonstrations of approach, take-off, bar clearance, and landing.
• Practice high jump techniques in small groups under supervision.
• Teacher provides feedback on technique, coordination, and safety.
• Discuss how avoiding common mistakes improves performance and reduces injury.

Assessment Checks:
• Demonstrations:

  • “Demonstrate proper take-off technique.”
  • “Show correct bar clearance posture.”
    • Oral questions:
  • “Explain one safety measure in high jump.”
  • “Name one common mistake and how to correct it.”
    • Observe participation and adherence to safety protocols during practice.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
• High jump combines strength, coordination, and technique.
• Key elements:

  • Approach: builds speed and rhythm.
  • Take-off: maximizes vertical lift.
  • Bar clearance: proper body alignment avoids knocking the bar.
  • Landing: ensures safety and prevents injury.
    • Observing and correcting common mistakes like incorrect stride or unsafe landing improves performance and minimizes risks.
    • Emphasis on safety, proper warm-up, and checking equipment before practice is crucial.

Practical Activities:

  • Students practice approach, take-off, and bar clearance on high jump mats.
  • Conduct mini high jump sessions with peer observation.
  • Teacher demonstrates corrections for common errors during practice.

Assignment:

  • Write a paragraph: “Explain why safety and proper technique are important in high jump.”
  • List three key steps in high jump and describe one tip to perform each safely.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• Teacher will ask students to recall equipment, rules, approach, take-off, bar clearance, landing, and safety measures in high jump.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students will write short answers to:

  1. List two pieces of equipment used in high jump.
  2. Explain the correct take-off technique.
  3. Mention one safety measure for high jump.
Teacher will collect and quickly review for understanding
    • Provide oral feedback before class ends
Assignment (Expanded): Students will practice high jump approach and take-off at home or school, record challenges faced, and reflect on improvements needed.

Follow-up Activity: Students will pair up to observe and give feedback on each other’s high jump technique in the next session.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Provided with shorter run-up distances and guided demonstrations.
• Advanced Learners: Challenge with higher bar clearance and analysis of technique refinement.
• Students with Disabilities: Supported with adapted equipment, peer assistance, and safe landing practices.
