Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 27, Period 5
Topic: Fundamental Skills and Techniques (Theory + Demonstration)
Sub-topic: Basic skills, posture, body alignment, and controlled movements

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate fundamental skills such as balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination.
  2. Apply correct posture, body alignment, and controlled movements during exercises.
  3. Identify and perform examples of floor exercises, basic stunts, and tumbling techniques.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Importance and safety rules of gymnastics and tumbling.
• Basic warm-up routines and exercises.

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Physical education textbooks for Grade 7
• Teaching aids: Gymnastics mats, videos of floor exercises, cones, posters of posture and alignment, markers for practice areas
• Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• “What skills do you think are most important for gymnastics?”
• “Why is correct posture and alignment essential in gymnastics?”
The teacher will record responses on the board.
Teacher’s Role: Lead discussion, clarify misconceptions, and guide a short warm-up focusing on flexibility and balance.
Learner’s Role:
• Share their ideas about fundamental skills.
• Participate actively in warm-up exercises and discussion.

B – BUILDING KNOWLEDGE (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:
• Demonstrate and explain basic fundamental skills:

  • Balance exercises: Standing on one foot, beam walking, core stabilization drills.
  • Flexibility stretches: Forward bends, splits, shoulder and leg stretches.
  • Strength conditioning: Push-ups, sit-ups, leg lifts, plank exercises.
  • Coordination drills: Arm-leg coordination, simple tumbling sequences, floor transitions.
    • Demonstrate techniques for safe performance:
  • Correct posture and body alignment during exercises.
  • Controlled movements emphasizing smooth execution and precision.
    • Show examples of floor exercises, basic stunts, and tumbling sequences.
    • Correct common mistakes and provide step-by-step guidance during demonstrations.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
• Practice demonstrated skills individually and in small groups.
• Observe peers and provide constructive feedback.
• Focus on performing controlled movements, maintaining posture and alignment.
• Participate in guided drills emphasizing balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination.

Assessment Checks:
• Practical demonstrations:

  • “Demonstrate a balance exercise.”
  • “Show correct body alignment during a floor exercise.”
  • “Perform a basic tumbling skill safely.”
    • Teacher observes technique, control, and adherence to instructions during practice.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
• Fundamental skills form the foundation of gymnastics and tumbling.
• Proper posture, body alignment, and controlled movements reduce the risk of injuries and improve performance.
• Regular practice develops strength, flexibility, coordination, and confidence.
• Observing and correcting mistakes enhances learning and ensures safe participation.

Practical Activities:

  • Rotate students through stations: balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination drills.
  • Perform mini tumbling sequences combining floor exercises and basic stunts.
  • Peer review: observe a partner and give one positive feedback and one correction tip.

Assignment:

  • Write a paragraph: “Explain why fundamental skills are important in gymnastics and how proper posture prevents injury.”
  • List three balance exercises, three flexibility stretches, and three coordination drills practiced today.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• Teacher will ask students to recall the fundamental skills, key techniques for posture and alignment, and examples of floor exercises and stunts.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students will write short answers to:

  1. List two fundamental skills necessary for gymnastics.
  2. Explain why body alignment is important.
  3. Name one basic tumbling skill and describe how to perform it safely.
Teacher will collect and quickly review for understanding
    • Provide oral feedback before class ends
Assignment (Expanded): Students will practice fundamental skills and basic tumbling sequences at home or school, recording observations on posture, control, and alignment.

Follow-up Activity: Students will perform a short routine combining balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination in the next practical lesson.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Provided with simplified exercises, step-by-step guidance, and visual demonstrations.
• Advanced Learners: Tasked with creating slightly more complex sequences combining multiple skills.
• Students with Disabilities: Supported with adapted exercises, peer assistance, and modified floor movements.
