Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 23, Period 4
Topic: High Jump – Practice, Drills, and Application
Sub-topic: Practical sessions, drills, teamwork, and safe practice

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate high jump approach, take-off, bar clearance, and landing techniques through practice.
  2. Perform drills to improve coordination, timing, and jumping technique.
  3. Apply skills in group activities, emphasizing teamwork and safety.

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Basics of high jump – equipment, rules, approach, take-off, bar clearance, and landing.
• Safety measures in athletics.

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Physical education textbooks for Grade 7
• Teaching aids: High jump mat, bar, cones, markers, videos showing drills, stopwatch
• Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• “What drills do you think help improve high jump performance?”
• “Why is teamwork important in group practice?”
The teacher will record responses on the board.
Teacher’s Role: Lead warm-up exercises, highlight the importance of drills and teamwork, and correct misconceptions.
Learner’s Role:
• Participate in warm-up exercises actively.
• Share ideas and discuss importance of safe practice.

B – BUILDING KNOWLEDGE (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:
• Demonstrate and guide practical high jump drills:

  • Approach drills: Maintain proper stride length and rhythm during run-up.
  • Take-off drills: Use one-foot push-off to achieve maximum height.
  • Bar clearance drills: Correct body positioning over the bar to avoid dislodging it.
  • Landing drills: Practice safe landing techniques on the mat.
  • Group activities: Students take turns performing jumps while peers observe and provide constructive feedback.
    • Monitor safety, technique, and ensure students follow warm-up and spacing protocols.
    • Correct mistakes in real time and provide tips for improvement.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
• Practice high jump techniques individually and in small groups.
• Perform drills focusing on approach, take-off, bar clearance, and landing.
• Observe peers and provide peer feedback on technique and safety.
• Discuss strategies to improve performance and prevent injuries.
• Participate actively in group activities, ensuring everyone follows safety protocols.

Assessment Checks:
• Demonstrations:

  • “Demonstrate proper approach for high jump.”
  • “Show correct take-off technique.”
    • Oral question:
  • “Explain one safety measure during group practice.”
    • Teacher observes execution, coordination, posture, and adherence to safety during drills.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
• Practical high jump sessions enhance coordination, leg strength, and jumping technique.
• Peer feedback encourages teamwork, observation skills, and safety awareness.
• Correcting mistakes in real time prevents injuries and promotes skill mastery.
• Emphasis on proper warm-up, mat safety, and spacing between participants is essential.
• Progressive practice builds confidence and allows students to apply techniques learned in theory lessons.

Practical Activities:

  • Rotate students through stations: approach, take-off, bar clearance, and landing.
  • Conduct mini high jump competitions applying correct techniques.
  • Peer review: each student observes a classmate and gives one positive point and one improvement tip.

Assignment:

  • Write a paragraph: “Describe the steps to perform a high jump safely and effectively.”
  • List three drills that improve high jump performance and explain their purpose.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• Teacher will ask students to recall key techniques for approach, take-off, bar clearance, landing, and teamwork practices.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students will write short answers to:

  1. Name one drill to improve approach technique.
  2. Explain the proper landing technique in high jump.
  3. Describe one way teamwork helps in practical sessions.
Teacher will collect and quickly review for understanding
    • Provide oral feedback before class ends
Assignment (Expanded): Students will practice high jump drills at home or school, record improvements, and note any challenges faced.

Follow-up Activity: Students will participate in mini high jump competitions applying techniques learned while emphasizing safety and sportsmanship.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Provided with shorter run-up distances and guided one-on-one practice.
• Advanced Learners: Challenge with higher bar heights and advanced techniques.
• Students with Disabilities: Supported with adapted equipment, peer assistance, and modified drills for safety.
