Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• “What football skill do you enjoy most – passing, dribbling, or shooting?”
• “Why do you think teamwork is important when playing football?”
Teacher will write responses on the board and link them to today’s focus.
Teacher’s Role: Stimulate interest and prepare learners for practical drills.
Learner’s Role:
• Share their views and experiences.
• Respond actively to questions.

B – BUILDING KNOWLEDGE (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:
• Demonstrate key football skills:

  • Passing: Short pass, long pass, using inside foot and instep techniques.
  • Dribbling: Controlling the ball while running, keeping close touches, changing direction.
  • Shooting: Striking the ball with power and accuracy toward goal.
  • Defending: Tackling, marking opponents, intercepting passes, and clearing the ball.
  • Goalkeeping: Catching, diving, positioning, distributing the ball, and communicating with defenders.
    • Explain teamwork skills essential in football:
  • Communication on the pitch.
  • Trust among teammates.
  • Cooperation during offensive and defensive plays.
    • Set up simple drills:
  • Pair passing drills for accuracy and control.
  • Dribbling around cones to improve agility.
  • Short shooting practice at goalposts or target areas.
  • Mini-defense drills for tackling and marking.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
• Observe teacher demonstrations carefully.
• Practice skills in pairs or small groups.
• Rotate through stations:

  • Station 1: Passing drills.
  • Station 2: Dribbling around cones.
  • Station 3: Shooting practice.
  • Station 4: Defending techniques.
  • Station 5: Basic goalkeeping practice.
    • Work in small groups to apply teamwork during drills, emphasizing communication and coordination.
    • Provide peer feedback within groups on skill execution and cooperation.

Assessment Checks:
• Teacher observes and asks learners to demonstrate:

  • “Show me how to pass with the inside of your foot.”
  • “Who can demonstrate a dribbling technique?”
  • “What is the goalkeeper’s role?”
    • Evaluate participation in drills and application of teamwork principles.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):
Passing: Ensures smooth coordination and ball distribution among teammates.
Dribbling: Helps maintain possession while navigating past opponents.
Shooting: Converts team efforts into goals, emphasizing accuracy and power.
Defending: Protects the goal, prevents opponents’ scoring opportunities, and supports team structure.
Goalkeeping: Last line of defense, requires alertness, agility, and decision-making.
Teamwork: Integrates all skills, ensuring coordinated play, trust, and effective communication. Football is primarily a team sport, where collaboration is key to success.

Practical Activities:

  • Station-based drills with rotation to practice passing, dribbling, shooting, defending, and goalkeeping.
  • Small-group games emphasizing teamwork and skill application.
  • Peer evaluation for skill improvement and communication.

Assignment:

  • Write a reflection on your strengths and weaknesses in football skills.
  • Create a mini training plan showing how you would improve passing, dribbling, shooting, defending, or goalkeeping over one week.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary:
• Teacher will ask students to recall: passing, dribbling, shooting, defending, goalkeeping, and teamwork skills.
Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students will answer orally or in writing:

  1. Name two types of passing in football.
  2. What is the main role of a defender?
  3. Mention one skill every goalkeeper must learn.
Teacher will review quickly and provide oral feedback.
Assignment (Expanded): Students will write one page in their notebooks on “The football skill I enjoy most and why.”

Follow-up Activity: Students will practice passing and dribbling at home or in their community and report back on their experience.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Provided with one skill to focus on (e.g., passing only) until confident
• Advanced Learners: Asked to demonstrate more complex drills and support peers in learning
• Students with Disabilities: Adapt drills to ability (e.g., stationary passing, role as assistant goalkeeper)
