Week 10 Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 10, Period 2
Topic: Importance of Islands, Capes, and Mountains of Liberia
Sub-topic: Islands, Capes, Mountains
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Identify major islands, capes, and mountains of Liberia
  2. Explain the formation and characteristics of mountains and capes
  3. Discuss the significance of islands, capes, and mountains to humans and the environment

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Basic landforms and water bodies
• Major rivers, oceans, and seas
• Vegetation and topography of Liberia

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Social studies for Grade 7
• Teaching aids: Maps of Liberia, images/videos of islands, capes, and mountains, charts, flashcards
• Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• “Can you name any islands or capes in Liberia?”
• “What mountains are you familiar with in Liberia?”
• “Why do you think these features are important to the country?”
The teacher will record their responses on the board.

Teacher’s Role: Guide discussion, correct misconceptions, link prior knowledge of rivers, lakes, and forests to islands, capes, and mountains
Learner’s Role:
• Share prior knowledge and observations
• Respond verbally and participate in discussion

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role: Explain features of islands, capes, and mountains in Liberia using detailed examples, maps, diagrams, and multimedia; discuss formation, characteristics, and significance

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
• Islands: Examples include Bushrod Island, Dozoa Island, and other coastal islands. Activity – locate islands on map; discuss formation through rising land, volcanic activity, or sediment deposition. Significance: fishing, tourism, settlements, transport routes.
• Capes: Examples include Cape Mesurado and Cape Mount. Activity – identify on map; discuss characteristics such as projecting into the sea, effect on shipping routes, weather patterns. Significance: navigation, tourism, coastal protection.
• Mountains of Liberia: Examples include Mount Wuteve, Gibi Range, Nimba Range. Activity – locate on map; discuss formation through tectonic uplift. Significance: source of rivers, minerals, scenic landscapes, climate regulation.

Assessment Checks: Ask “Name one island and its importance”; “Give one use of a cape”; “Name a mountain and explain its significance.” Observe participation in map and discussion activities; quick oral quiz on features and uses

Notes (Expanded & Detailed): Islands are landmasses surrounded by water, important for fishing, tourism, settlements, and transportation. Capes are points of land projecting into the sea, influencing navigation, weather, and tourism. Mountains in Liberia are formed through tectonic movements, providing mineral resources, regulating climate, supplying water, and offering scenic landscapes. Understanding these features promotes awareness of geography, environmental conservation, and sustainable utilization of natural resources.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: The teacher will ask the students to recall:
• Names and locations of major islands, capes, and mountains in Liberia
• Formation and characteristics of each feature
• Significance to humans and environment

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students write short answers: Name one island and its use; State one importance of a cape; Give one significance of a mountain
• Teacher will collect and quickly review for understanding
• Provide oral feedback before class ends

Assignment (Expanded): Draw a labeled map of Liberia showing islands, capes, and mountains; Write a paragraph explaining the importance of one island, one cape, and one mountain

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Use simplified maps, visual aids, and step-by-step explanations
• Advanced Learners: Research additional islands, capes, or mountain ranges in Liberia and present findings
• Students with Disabilities: Provide tactile maps, enlarged images, and guided group discussion
