Week 9 Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 9, Period 2
Topic: Importance of Water Bodies
Sub-topic: Major Rivers, Oceans, Seas, River Pollution
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Identify major rivers, oceans, and seas of the world and Liberia
  2. Explain the importance of rivers, oceans, and seas to humans and the environment
  3. Discuss causes, effects, and prevention of river pollution

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Location of continents, countries, and major landforms
• Basic knowledge of lakes, rivers, and oceans

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Social studies for Grade 7
• Teaching aids: Maps of the world and Liberia, images/videos of rivers, oceans, and seas, charts, flashcards
• Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• “Can you name the major rivers in Liberia and the world?”
• “Why are oceans and seas important for humans and animals?”
• “What do you think causes river pollution?”
The teacher will record their responses on the board.

Teacher’s Role: Guide discussion, correct misconceptions, link prior knowledge of lakes and topography to water bodies
Learner’s Role:
• Share prior knowledge and experiences
• Respond verbally and participate in discussion

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role: Explain the importance and characteristics of water bodies with detailed examples, maps, diagrams, and multimedia; discuss river pollution causes and prevention strategies

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
• Major Rivers: Examples include Nile, Congo, Niger, Saint Paul (Liberia), Saint John (Liberia). Activity – locate rivers on map; discuss sources, courses, and uses (drinking water, irrigation, transport, hydropower).
• Oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Southern, Arctic. Activity – identify on map; discuss significance: climate regulation, fisheries, shipping, recreation, oxygen production.
• Seas: Mediterranean, Caribbean, Red Sea, etc. Activity – compare size with oceans; discuss importance for trade, fishing, tourism.
• River Pollution: Causes – industrial waste, domestic waste, oil spills, agricultural runoff. Effects – waterborne diseases, destruction of aquatic life, reduced water quality. Activity – students brainstorm ways to reduce pollution and discuss real-life examples.

Assessment Checks: Ask “Name two major rivers in Liberia and their uses?”; “State two reasons why oceans are important”; “Give one cause of river pollution.” Observe participation in map and discussion activities; quick oral quiz on causes and effects of pollution

Notes (Expanded & Detailed): Major rivers provide freshwater for consumption, irrigation, transport, hydropower, and fisheries. Oceans regulate climate, support marine biodiversity, enable shipping and trade, and provide recreation and food. Seas are smaller saltwater bodies used for fishing, transport, and trade. River pollution from human activities harms aquatic ecosystems, water quality, and human health. Preventive measures include proper waste disposal, sewage treatment, and environmental education. Understanding water bodies and their importance helps learners appreciate conservation, sustainable use, and environmental stewardship.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: The teacher will ask the students to recall:
• Names and locations of major rivers, oceans, and seas
• Importance of water bodies to humans and the environment
• Causes and effects of river pollution

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students write short answers: Name one major river and its use; State one importance of oceans; Give one cause of river pollution
• Teacher will collect and quickly review for understanding
• Provide oral feedback before class ends

Assignment (Expanded): Create a table showing rivers, oceans, and seas with location, uses, and threats; Write a paragraph suggesting ways to prevent river pollution

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Use simplified maps, visual aids, and step-by-step explanations
• Advanced Learners: Research unusual rivers, seas, or ocean ecosystems and present findings
• Students with Disabilities: Provide tactile maps, enlarged images, and guided group discussion
