Week 8 Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 8, Period 2
Topic: Topography of Liberia
Sub-topic: Mountains, Lakes, Forests of Liberia

Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the major mountains, lakes, and forests in Liberia
  2. Explain the formation and characteristics of mountains
  3. Discuss the significance of lakes and forests to humans and the environment

Previous Knowledge
Students already know:
• Basic landforms and water bodies
• Vegetation types in Liberia and Africa

Instructional Materials
• Textbook: Social studies for Grade 7
• Teaching aids: Maps of Liberia, images/videos of mountains, lakes, and forests, charts, flashcards
• Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity: The teacher will ask the class:
• “Can you name any mountains, lakes, or forests in Liberia?”
• “Why do you think these features are important to the country?”
The teacher will record their responses on the board.

Teacher’s Role: Guide discussion, correct misconceptions, link prior knowledge of vegetation and landforms to Liberia’s topography
Learner’s Role:
• Share prior knowledge and observations
• Respond verbally and participate in discussion

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role: Explain topographical features in Liberia using detailed examples, maps, diagrams, and multimedia; encourage learners to actively participate in identifying and classifying features

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):
• Mountains of Liberia: Examples include Mount Wuteve, Gibi Range, and Nimba Range. Activity – locate mountains on map; discuss formation through tectonic movements and uplift. Significance: climate regulation, water sources, minerals, tourism.
• Lakes of Liberia: Major lakes include Lake Piso, Lake Shepherd, and other smaller freshwater bodies. Activity – identify on map; discuss characteristics such as depth, size, and water sources. Significance: drinking water, fishing, irrigation, habitat for wildlife.
• Forests of Liberia: Include Upper Guinean Rainforest and other dense tropical forests. Activity – classify trees, plants, and wildlife from images/videos. Significance: timber, medicinal plants, biodiversity, climate regulation, soil conservation.

Assessment Checks: Ask “Name one mountain in Liberia and explain its formation?”; “Give two uses of Liberia’s lakes”; “Why are forests important?” Observe participation in map and image activities; quick oral quiz on features and significance
Notes (Expanded & Detailed): Liberia’s topography is diverse with mountains formed by tectonic uplift, providing natural resources, rainfall regulation, and scenic landscapes. Lakes are crucial for freshwater supply, agriculture, fisheries, and wildlife habitats. Forests support biodiversity, provide timber and medicinal resources, regulate climate, and prevent soil erosion. Understanding these features helps learners appreciate geography, environmental conservation, and sustainable resource use.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Summary: The teacher will ask the students to recall:
• Names and locations of major mountains, lakes, and forests in Liberia
• Formation and characteristics of mountains
• Significance of lakes and forests

Evaluation Method (Expanded):
• Exit slip/quiz: Students write short answers: Name one mountain and explain how it was formed; State two uses of lakes; Give one importance of forests
• Teacher will collect and quickly review for understanding
• Provide oral feedback before class ends

Assignment (Expanded): Draw a labeled map of Liberia showing mountains, lakes, and forests; Write a paragraph on the importance of one mountain, one lake, and one forest

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
• Struggling Learners: Use simplified maps and visual aids; step-by-step verbal explanations
• Advanced Learners: Research additional mountains, lakes, or forest reserves in Liberia and present findings
• Students with Disabilities: Provide tactile maps, enlarged images, and guided group discussions
