Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  2. Use expressions for comparing prices in simple sentences.
  3. Apply adverbs of quantity (beaucoup de, assez de, trop de, moins de) correctly in sentences.
  4. Conjugate the verbs manger (to eat) and envoyer (to send) in présent de l’indicatif.
  5. Write and perform short dialogues describing prices and quantities.

Previous Knowledge

Students already know:

  • Numbers, money, and shopping vocabulary (Weeks 20–21).
  • Basic sentence patterns for bargaining (C’est trop cher !, Faites-moi un rabais).
  • Regular -er verb conjugation.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–7 minutes

  • Teacher holds up two items (e.g., a banana and an orange) with different prices.
  • Teacher says: “La banane coûte 200 francs. L’orange coûte 100 francs. C’est moins cher ici !”
  • Students repeat: “C’est moins cher ! C’est assez bon !”
  • Short class discussion: Which products are cher vs. bon marché?

Learners’ Role: Identify which item is more expensive/cheaper using new words.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Vocabulary (5 minutes)

Target Words:

  • bon marché → cheap
  • cher → expensive
  • prix élevé → high price
  • prix bas → low price

Teacher Models Sentences:

  1. Les vêtements au marché sont bon marché. (Clothes at the market are cheap.)
  2. Les portables sont chers. (Phones are expensive.)
  3. Cette voiture a un prix élevé. (This car has a high price.)
  4. Ce cahier a un prix bas. (This notebook has a low price.)

Learners’ Practice:

  • Class repeats chorally (3 times).
  • Individual repetition (5–6 students).
  • Pupils form their own examples:
    • Le riz est bon marché.
    • Les chaussures de marque sont chères.

 

  1. Expressions & Sentences (5 minutes)

Key Expressions:

  • C’est moins cher ici. → It’s cheaper here.
  • C’est assez bon. → It’s quite good.

Teacher Example:

  • Teacher: Le riz coûte 500 francs. Le pain coûte 300 francs.
  • Student: Le pain est moins cher.

Practice Activities:

  • Teacher gives 3–4 more pairs of prices; pupils respond.
  1. Un livre coûte 2 000 F, un cahier coûte 500 F.Le cahier est moins cher.
  2. Une montre coûte 15 000 F, un bracelet coûte 3 000 F.Le bracelet est moins cher.

  1. Grammar Focus – Adverbs of Quantity (7 minutes)

Adverbs Introduced:

  • beaucoup de → a lot of
  • assez de → enough
  • trop de → too much/many
  • moins de → less/fewer

Teacher Examples:

  1. J’achète beaucoup de fruits. (I buy a lot of fruits.)
  2. Nous avons assez de pain. (We have enough bread.)
  3. Tu manges trop de viande. (You eat too much meat.)
  4. Ils envoient moins de lettres. (They send fewer letters.)

Learners’ Guided Practice:

  • Teacher gives cues, pupils complete:
    • Je bois ______ d’eau. (beaucoup de / assez de)
    • Il y a ______ de sucre dans le thé. (trop de)
    • Nous achetons ______ légumes. (moins de)

Pair Work: Pupils create shopping list sentences with these adverbs. Example:

  • J’achète beaucoup de riz, assez de viande et moins de tomates.

Model Dialogue:
Client: Combien coûte ce pain ?
Vendeur: Il coûte 200 francs. C’est bon marché !
Client: Je prends beaucoup de pain et assez de fruits.
Vendeur: Très bien, voilà !

Learners’ Practice:

  • Pairs of pupils write short dialogues (5–6 lines) including:
    • At least 1 adverb of quantity (beaucoup de, trop de, assez de, moins de).
    • At least 1 price comparison (moins cher / bon marché / cher).
  • Pairs act out their dialogues for the class.

  1. Flashcard Matching: Pupils match adverbs (trop, assez, beaucoup, moins) with correct French examples.

Write a short paragraph (6–8 lines) about your shopping at the market. Include:

  • At least 2 price expressions (cher, bon marché, moins cher).
