Learning Objectives

  4. Use at least 5 opinion expressions in a structured piece of writing.
  5. Collaborate in peer review by correcting and improving each other’s work.

 

Previous Knowledge

Students already know:

  • Vocabulary for agreement/disagreement.
  • Polite expressions for giving opinions (Je partage l’avis de…, Je suis d’accord…, Je ne suis pas d’accord…, J’admets que…).
  • Conjugation and use of verbs (partager, admettre, commettre).
  • Simple dialogues and debates.

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–7 minutes
Activity:

  • Teacher asks: “Quelle est ton opinion sur l’école ?”
  • Pupils give short oral responses (L’école est amusante, Je ne suis pas d’accord, etc.).
  • Teacher explains that today they will move from short answers to full written compositions.

Learners’ Role: Respond orally and recall opinion expressions.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Review of Opinion Expressions (5 minutes)

Teacher lists and drills key expressions on the board:

  • Je partage l’avis de… → I share the opinion of…
  • J’admets que… → I admit that…
  • Je suis d’accord avec… → I agree with…
  • Je ne suis pas d’accord… → I disagree…
  • C’est vrai / C’est faux → That’s true / That’s false
  • Tu as raison / Tu as tort → You are right / You are wrong

Teacher Examples (spoken):

  1. Je partage l’avis de mon frère: la musique est agréable.
  2. J’admets que les devoirs sont utiles.
  3. Je suis d’accord avec ma mère: l’école est importante.
  4. Je ne suis pas d’accord: la télévision n’est pas meilleure que les livres.
  5. C’est vrai, les vacances sont nécessaires.
  6. Tu as tort! Le sport n’est pas inutile.

Pupil Practice:

  • Each pupil gives one short sentence orally.
  • Class repeats in chorus for pronunciation.

 

  1. Guided Writing (Teacher-led Model) (6 minutes)

Teacher writes a short model composition on the board and reads it aloud:

Model Text:
Mon opinion sur le sport : J’aime le sport parce qu’il est amusant. Je partage l’avis de mon ami qui adore le football. J’admets que le sport est important pour la santé. Mais je ne suis pas d’accord avec ceux qui disent que le sport est une perte de temps. Tu as raison si tu dis que le sport unit les gens.

Class Activity:

  • Pupils underline all opinion expressions in the text.
  • Teacher highlights sentence connectors (parce que, mais, si).
  • Pupils say the text aloud with correct intonation.

 

  1. Structured Practice – Writing Sentences into Paragraphs (6 minutes)

Step 1: Pupils write 3–4 individual sentences with opinion expressions.
Examples:

  • Je suis d’accord avec mon ami: l’école est importante.
  • J’admets que les maths sont difficiles.
  • Je ne suis pas d’accord: la télé n’est pas toujours intéressante.

Step 2: Teacher demonstrates how to link them into a short paragraph:
Mon opinion sur l’école : Je suis d’accord avec mon ami: l’école est importante. J’admets que les maths sont difficiles. Mais je ne suis pas d’accord: la télé n’est pas toujours intéressante. C’est vrai que l’école aide à préparer l’avenir.

 

  1. Free Writing (Independent Work) (7–8 minutes)

Pupils choose one theme: school, family, or hobbies.
They write a 5–7 line paragraph expressing their opinion.

Examples of prompts:

  • Ton opinion sur l’école.
  • Ton opinion sur la famille.
  • Ton opinion sur ton passe-temps préféré.

Example Student Output (School):
Je partage l’avis de mon professeur: l’école est nécessaire. J’admets que certaines matières sont difficiles. Mais je ne suis pas d’accord avec ceux qui disent que l’école est ennuyeuse. C’est vrai que l’école aide à réussir dans la vie. Tu as raison si tu dis que l’école construit l’avenir.

 

  1. Peer Review (5 minutes)
  • Pupils exchange notebooks.
  • Task: underline all opinion expressions (Je pense que…, Je suis d’accord…, J’admets que…).
  • Correct any spelling/grammar errors.
  • Give one oral comment to their partner (e.g., Ton texte est clair. Tu as oublié un accent.).

  1. Oral revision of opinion expressions (choral + individual).
  2. Identify and underline opinion phrases in teacher’s model composition.
  3. Write 3–4 simple sentences and combine into a coherent paragraph.
  4. Independent free writing task (5–7 lines) on a chosen theme.
  5. Peer review: underline opinion phrases, correct errors, give feedback.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)

Time: 5–10 minutes

  • Teacher summarizes how to turn short sentences into structured paragraphs.
  • Pupils share 1–2 sentences from their own compositions aloud.
  • Exit Task: Pupils write one opinion statement + one disagreement in their notebooks.

 

✅ Homework Assignment

Write a composition of 10–12 lines on:
“Mon opinion sur l’importance de l’éducation”

  • Use at least 5 different opinion expressions.

 

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies

  • Struggling learners: Provide sentence starters and guided outlines.
  • Advanced learners: Write longer essays (15–20 lines) with examples.
