Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–7 minutes
Activity:
• Teacher shows an object and asks: “Quel livre est-ce ?” / “Regardez ces objets, comment sont-ils ?”
• Pupils respond orally: “Ce livre est rouge. Ces chaises sont grandes.”
• Teacher introduces lesson focus: placement of adjectives and using ce, cet, cette, ces.

Learners’ Role: Recall prior adjective vocabulary, participate orally, observe visual cues.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Placement of Adjectives (7–8 minutes)

Teacher Explanation:

  • Most adjectives come after the noun.
  • Some common adjectives (BAGS: Beauty, Age, Goodness, Size) come before the noun.

Examples:

  • After noun:
    • une maison blanche
    • un livre intéressant
    • un ordinateur moderne
  • Before noun:
    • un petit garçon
    • une vieille femme
    • un beau livre
    • un bon repas

Activity:

  • Teacher writes 10 adjectives on board → pupils categorize into before noun vs after noun.
  • Choral drill: Teacher says noun + adjective → pupils correct placement.
    • Teacher: chaise / verte → Pupils: une chaise verte
    • Teacher: fille / jolie → Pupils: une jolie fille

Learners’ Task:

  • In pairs, describe 3 objects in classroom using correct placement.
    • un grand tableau noir
    • une petite boîte carrée

 

  1. Demonstrative Adjectives (8–10 minutes)

Teacher Explanation:

  • Singular:
    • ce (masc.) → Ce livre est intéressant.
    • cet (masc. before vowel/h) → Cet arbre est grand.
    • cette (fem.) → Cette chaise est petite.
  • Plural:
    • ces (masc. & fem.) → Ces stylos sont rouges.

Teacher Practice:

  • Holds up objects and models:
    • Ce stylo est bleu.
    • Cet ordinateur est moderne.
    • Cette porte est grande.
    • Ces cahiers sont verts.

Learners’ Task:

  • Pupils fill blanks orally:
    • Teacher: ___ arbre est haut. → Pupils: Cet arbre est haut.
    • Teacher: ___ filles sont jolies. → Pupils: Ces filles sont jolies.
  • Pair activity: “Voici + demonstrative.”
    • Voici ce livre rouge.
    • Voici cette table ronde.

 

  1. Sentence Construction Practice (5–7 minutes)

Activity:

  • Pupils combine demonstratives + adjectives + nouns.
  • Teacher provides noun + adjective → pupils form full sentence.

Examples:

  • ballon / rouge / petitCe ballon rouge est petit.
  • arbre / vert / grandCet arbre vert est grand.
  • livres / bleu / lourdCes livres bleus sont lourds.
  • fille / jolie / jeuneCette fille jolie est jeune.

Learners’ Task:

  • In pairs, create 4 sentences (2 singular, 2 plural).
  • Volunteers read aloud → class checks placement + agreement.
  1. Mini Role Play / Oral Practice (5–7 minutes)

Setup: Groups of 3–4. Each group describes objects or classmates.

Rules:

  1. Use ce, cet, cette, ces correctly.
  2. Include at least 2 adjectives (size, color, shape).
  3. Speak for 1–2 minutes.

Example Role Play:

  • Élève 1: Ce sac est rouge et petit.
  • Élève 2: Cet ordinateur est grand et moderne.
  • Élève 3: Cette fille est jolie et jeune.
  • Élève 4: Ces chaises sont longues et confortables.

Feedback: Teacher and peers correct gender agreement + placement.

 

  1. Writing Practice (5–7 minutes)

Task: Pupils write a short paragraph (5–6 lines) describing 2–3 objects or classmates.

Requirements:

  • At least 2 singular demonstratives (ce, cet, cette).
  • At least 1 plural demonstrative (ces).
  • At least 2 adjectives with correct placement.

Sample Starter:

  • Cette chaise est petite et verte. Cet ordinateur est grand et noir. Ces livres sont rouges et lourds. Ce garçon est jeune et intelligent.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Exit Task)
Time: 5–10 minutes
• Teacher summarizes key points: placement of adjectives, demonstratives in singular and plural forms
• Pupils share one oral sentence describing an object
• Exit Task: Each pupil writes one sentence: “___ livre est ______.”
