Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–7 minutes
Activity:
• Teacher asks: “Que faites-vous quand vous êtes malade ?”
• Pupils respond orally using previous health expressions: Je prends du sirop, Je dors, Je vais chez le médecin…
• Teacher introduces vocabulary for medicines and treatments.
Learners’ Role: Recall health-related vocabulary and participate orally.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Vocabulary Introduction (7 minutes)

Key Words & Expressions:

  • Avaler → to swallow
  • Sucer → to suck
  • Respecter la dose → respect the dose
  • Ordonnance → prescription
  • Comprimé → tablet
  • Sirop → syrup
  • Médicament → medicine
  • Pharmacie → pharmacy

Teacher Practice:

  • Uses flashcards or realia (empty syrup bottle, mock tablets, prescription paper).
  • Pronounces each word slowly → pupils repeat chorally and individually.
  • Writes sample sentences on the board and reads aloud:
    • Je dois avaler le comprimé après le repas.
    • Il faut respecter la dose du sirop.
    • Le médecin écrit une ordonnance.
    • La pharmacie vend des médicaments.

Learners’ Task:

  • Pupils form oral sentences using new words.
  • Teacher asks:
    • “Que fait-on avec un comprimé ?” (On avale le comprimé.)
    • “Où achète-t-on les médicaments ?” (À la pharmacie.)

 

  1. Grammar – Conjugation Practice (7 minutes)

Target verbs: avaler, sucer, manger, dormir

Conjugation (présent de l’indicatif):

  • Avaler: j’avale, tu avales, il/elle avale, nous avalons, vous avalez, ils/elles avalent
  • Sucer: je suce, tu suces, il/elle suce, nous suçons, vous sucez, ils/elles sucent
  • Manger: je mange, tu manges, il/elle mange, nous mangeons, vous mangez, ils/elles mangent
  • Dormir: je dors, tu dors, il/elle dort, nous dormons, vous dormez, ils/elles dorment

Teacher Drill:

  • Teacher calls subject → pupils respond with conjugated verb.
    • “Je… (avaler)” → J’avale le comprimé.
    • “Ils… (dormir)” → Ils dorment huit heures.

Learners’ Practice:

  • Pupils write 3 sentences using each verb.
  • Examples:
    • Je mange trois repas par jour.
    • Nous avalons les comprimés avec de l’eau.
    • Elle suce le bonbon médicinal.
    • Vous dormez tôt le soir.

 

  1. Sentence Construction with Il faut… (6–7 minutes)

Teacher explains:

  • Il faut + infinitive = necessity/advice.

Examples on board:

  • Il faut avaler le comprimé après le repas.
  • Il faut sucer le bonbon médicinal lentement.
  • Il faut respecter la dose prescrite par le médecin.
  • Il faut dormir huit heures par nuit pour rester en bonne santé.

Learners’ Practice:

  • Pupils create 2–3 sentences each using Il faut… with new vocabulary.
  • Pupils read aloud → teacher checks grammar and pronunciation.

 

  1. Role Play – Doctor & Patient (6–7 minutes)

Setup: Pupils in pairs simulate doctor-patient conversation.

Rules:

  1. Use at least 2 verbs (avaler, sucer, manger, dormir).
  2. Use at least 2 expressions related to medicines (comprimé, sirop, ordonnance, respecter la dose).
  3. At least 4–5 exchanges per dialogue.

Model Example:

  • Doctor: Bonjour, comment vous sentez-vous ?
  • Patient: Bonjour docteur, je suis malade.
  • Doctor: Il faut avaler ce comprimé trois fois par jour.
  • Patient: D’accord, je le prends après chaque repas.
  • Doctor: Et il faut dormir suffisamment.
  • Patient: Merci docteur, je vais respecter vos conseils.

Learners’ Task:

  • Pairs prepare dialogues (3–4 minutes).
  • A few pairs perform for the class.

 

  1. Writing Practice (5–6 minutes)

Task: Pupils write 4–5 sentences on “Comment prendre des médicaments correctement.”

Requirements:

  • Include at least 2 verbs and 2 vocabulary words.
  • Use at least 1 Il faut… sentence.

Sample Answer:
Il faut avaler le sirop après le dîner.
Je dors suffisamment pour guérir.
Il faut respecter la dose prescrite par le médecin.
Je suce le comprimé lentement.

Time: 5–10 minutes
• Teacher summarizes vocabulary, conjugation, and sentence construction with Il faut….
• Pupils share one oral sentence about medicines or health instructions.
• Exit Task: Each pupil writes: Il faut ______ pour rester en bonne santé.

• Paragraph (5–6 lines) on taking medicine and daily health habits.
