Learning Objectives

  4. Conjugate the verbs diminuer (to reduce) and vendre (to sell) in the présent de l’indicatif.
  5. Perform short role plays simulating bargaining in the market.

  • Numbers, shopping expressions, and basic transaction phrases.
  • Vocabulary for products, money, and payment (from Week 20).

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–7 minutes

  • Teacher enters class holding a toy item (e.g., a bag).
  • Says: “Ce sac coûte 10 000 francs !”
  • Students shout back: “C’est trop cher !” (with teacher guidance).
  • Teacher introduces today’s focus: how to negotiate in French markets.

Learners’ Role: React to teacher’s prices using trop cher / moins cher.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Vocabulary & Expressions (7 minutes)

Teacher introduces bargaining-related vocabulary and expressions.

New Words:

  • discuter un prix → to discuss a price
  • négocier → to negotiate
  • rabais → discount
  • réduction → reduction

Key Expressions:

  • C’est trop cher ! → It’s too expensive!
  • Pouvez-vous diminuer le prix ? → Can you reduce the price?
  • Faites-moi un rabais, s’il vous plaît. → Give me a discount, please.
  • Je ne peux pas payer autant. → I can’t pay that much.
  • Acceptez-vous 5 000 francs ? → Do you accept 5,000 francs?

Class Practice:

  • Choral repetition (3 times as a group).
  • Individual practice (teacher calls 5–6 pupils to repeat).
  • Teacher asks in French: Que veux-tu dire “discount” en français ? (Answer: rabais / réduction).

Mini Drill: Teacher says English → pupils respond in French.

  • Too expensive → C’est trop cher.
  • Can you reduce the price? → Pouvez-vous diminuer le prix ?

 

  1. Grammar Focus – Intensive Adverbs (6 minutes)

Target Adverbs:

  • trop → too much / too
  • assez → enough
  • beaucoup → a lot / very much
  • moins → less

Teacher Examples:

  1. C’est trop cher ! (It’s too expensive!)
  2. Ce prix est assez bon. (This price is fair enough.)
  3. Vous demandez beaucoup d’argent. (You are asking for too much money.)
  4. Je veux payer moins. (I want to pay less.)

Class Activity:

  • Teacher gives sentence stems, pupils complete:
    • Ce pantalon est ______ cher. (trop / assez)
    • Il y a ______ de monde au marché. (beaucoup)
    • Je veux payer ______. (moins)

Pair Work: Pupils make 2 new sentences each using trop, assez, beaucoup, moins and share aloud.

Diminuer (to reduce):

  • Je diminue
  • Tu diminues
  • Il/elle diminue

Vendre (to sell):

Oral Drill: Teacher calls a pronoun, pupils respond with correct verb form.

Written Exercise (Fill-in-the-blank):

Extra Challenge: Pupils write 2 original sentences with diminuer and 2 with vendre.

Model Dialogue 1 – Bargaining at the Market
Client: Combien coûte ce pantalon ?
Vendeur: Il coûte 8 000 francs.
Client: C’est trop cher ! Pouvez-vous diminuer le prix ?
Vendeur: D’accord, je vends à 6 000 francs.
Client: Faites-moi un rabais, s’il vous plaît.
Vendeur: Très bien, 5 500 francs.

Model Dialogue 2 – Negotiating for Fruit
Client: Combien coûtent ces oranges ?
Vendeur: Elles coûtent 2 500 francs.
Client: C’est beaucoup trop cher ! Faites-moi une réduction.
Vendeur: Bon, je diminue le prix à 2 000 francs.
Client: Merci, je paie.

Class Activity:

  • Pupils work in pairs → seller and client.
  • Each pair performs bargaining with props (books, pens, fruits, etc.).
  • Teacher listens and corrects use of trop, assez, beaucoup, moins.
  • A few groups perform in front of class.

 

Learners’ Expanded & Practical Activities

  1. Matching Activity: Pupils match French expressions (C’est trop cher !, Faites-moi un rabais…) with English meanings.
  2. Sentence Transformation: Teacher gives simple sentences → pupils rewrite with adverbs.

✅ Homework Assignment

Write a dialogue (8–10 lines) between a client and a vendor at the market. Your dialogue must include:

  • At least 3 bargaining expressions (C’est trop cher !, Faites-moi un rabais…).
  • At least 2 adverbs (trop, assez, beaucoup, moins).
  • At least 1 verb in present tense (diminuer or vendre).

 

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
