Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Construct longer sentences and short dialogues using opinion expressions.
  2. Participate in oral debates, agreeing or disagreeing with classmates’ statements.
  3. Use polite expressions to defend their opinions.
  4. Apply previously learned verbs (partager, admettre, commettre) in conversations.
  5. Work collaboratively in role plays, debates, and group discussions.

 

Previous Knowledge

Students already know:

  • Vocabulary and expressions for agreeing/disagreeing.
  • Polite opinion expressions (Je suis d’accord avec toi, Je ne suis pas d’accord, Tu as raison, Tu as tort).
  • Conjugation of verbs (partager, admettre, commettre).

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–7 minutes
Activity:

  • Teacher gives a statement: “Le chocolat est meilleur que le riz.”
  • Pupils respond: C’est vrai! / C’est faux! and justify briefly.
  • Teacher introduces the idea of defending opinions politely.

Learners’ Role: Respond spontaneously and prepare for extended dialogue.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Review – Opinion Expressions in Context (5 minutes)

Teacher quickly recaps useful opinion phrases on the board:

  • Je partage l’avis de… → I share the opinion of…
  • J’admets que… → I admit that…
  • Je suis d’accord avec toi. → I agree with you.
  • Je ne suis pas d’accord. → I disagree.
  • Tu as raison. → You are right.
  • Tu as tort. → You are wrong.

Teacher Example Sentences:

  1. Je partage l’avis de mon ami: les vacances sont amusantes.
  2. J’admets que le français est difficile.
  3. Je suis d’accord avec toi: le football est passionnant.
  4. Je ne suis pas d’accord: la musique est meilleure que le sport.
  5. Tu as raison, les livres sont importants.
  6. Tu as tort! Les devoirs ne sont pas inutiles.

Pupil Activity: Repeat expressions aloud, then give one short sentence each.

 

  1. Role Plays (Pairs) (6 minutes)

Pupils work in pairs: one gives an opinion, the other reacts politely.

Model 1:

  • A: Je pense que le football est amusant.
  • B: Je ne suis pas d’accord. La musique est plus intéressante.

Model 2:

  • A: Je crois que la famille est importante.
  • B: Je suis d’accord avec toi.

Model 3:

  • A: Je dis que les vacances sont trop longues.
  • B: Tu as tort! Les vacances sont nécessaires.

Extra Practice: Teacher calls on random pairs to act out in front of the class.

 

  1. Mini-Debates (Small Groups) (7–8 minutes)

Class splits into groups of 4–5. Each group is assigned a debate topic.
Two pupils argue Pour (For), two argue Contre (Against).

Sample Debate Topics:

  1. Le sport est meilleur que la musique.
    • For: Je suis d’accord! Le sport est bon pour la santé.
    • Against: Je ne suis pas d’accord. La musique est relaxante.
  2. L’école est amusante.
    • For: Je partage l’avis du professeur: apprendre est intéressant.
    • Against: Tu as tort! L’école est parfois ennuyeuse.
  3. Les devoirs sont nécessaires.
    • For: J’admets que les devoirs nous aident à pratiquer.
    • Against: Je ne suis pas d’accord. Les devoirs sont trop longs.

Teacher Role: Moves around, listens, and ensures pupils use polite expressions.

 

  1. Group Discussions (6–7 minutes)

Class divides into groups of 4–5. Each group gets one theme to discuss using at least 3 opinion expressions.

Themes:

  • Family: Les parents sont sévères mais justes.
  • School: Les professeurs donnent trop de devoirs.
  • Hobbies: Le football est plus amusant que la lecture.

Example Discussion (School):

  • A: Je pense que les professeurs donnent trop de devoirs.
  • B: Je suis d’accord.
  • C: Peut-être… mais les devoirs nous aident à apprendre.
  • D: Je ne suis pas d’accord. Les devoirs prennent trop de temps.

Class Sharing: One reporter from each group presents the group’s conclusion in French.

  1. Learners’ Expanded Practical Activities (Throughout Lesson)
  1. Repeat opinion expressions orally in chorus and individually.
  2. Role plays in pairs: each student must both give and respond to an opinion.
  3. Mini-debates in groups, defending Pour or Contre.
  4. Group discussions on given themes; group reporter presents findings.

 

Quick Formative Assessment (End of Main Lesson Body)

  1. Oral Practice: Teacher asks 3 quick opinion questions. Pupils must agree/disagree politely.
  • “La musique est inutile.” → Pupil: Je ne suis pas d’accord.
  • “Les vacances sont nécessaires.” → Pupil: Tu as raison.
  • “Le français est difficile.” → Pupil: Peut-être…
  1. Written Short Task: Pupils complete in notebooks:
  2. Write 2 sentences showing agreement.
  3. Write 2 sentences showing disagreement.
  4. Write 1 sentence with J’admets que….
  5. Peer Feedback: Pupils exchange notebooks, underline correct opinion expressions in their partner’s work.

 

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)

Time: 5–10 minutes

  • Recap of polite expressions for debates.
  • Teacher asks pupils to summarize one debate in 2–3 sentences.
  • Exit Task: Pupils write one opinion sentence and one polite disagreement.

 

✅ Homework Assignment

  1. Write a short paragraph (5–7 lines) giving your opinion about school.
  2. Use at least three different opinion expressions (e.g., Je partage l’avis de…, J’admets que…, Je ne suis pas d’accord…).

 

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies

  • Struggling learners: Provide opinion starters and model dialogues.
  • Advanced learners: Lead debates and include at least 4–5 expressions in one paragraph.
  • Students with disabilities: Allow oral responses, use peer support, and flexible participation.
